Editorial Analysis
Writing Exercise # 5 – Editorial Analysis
Writing an Introduction Paragraph
Topic
This writing activity is to help you get started on your editorial project, and write an effective introduction paragraph. Here’s what you need to do.
1. Find a current editorial (Op-Eds) that interests you from The New York Times or a major newspaper or magazine (USA Today, Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post …etc.). To meet the length requirement, make sure that the editorial you choose is a fairly long editorial. (See sample editorials in Week 7 Module in eCampus).
2. Write an introduction paragraph (about 5-8 sentences) that does two things: First, summarize the essay and describe an overview of the editorial’s argument, purpose, and main ideas. Which article did you read? Who wrote it? Where is it published? What is the editorial’s thesis? Second, write a well-established thesis, which is debatable, narrow, focused, and requires proof (See sample thesis in week 8 module in eCampus). Do NOT write the kind of thesis beginning “The purpose of this essay is to analyze …”
Be sure to use MLA format including heading and header. The title of this writing is “Writing Exercise 6: Editorial Analysis Introduction”. If you have questions about this assignment, feel free to contact me: [email protected].
