Overview

This assignment picks up where Assignment 1 left off. Having accurately framed the problem or opportunity at Carolinas HealthCare System in Assignment 1, we now turn our attention to analyzing the data and developing a set of recommended actions based on that analysis.

Since we can never have complete data, our decision-making process must acknowledge what we know and what we do not know. Even with incomplete data, our actions must be reasonable given the time frame and resources we have. Additionally, any actions we recommend must include a clear understanding of how success will be measured.

Instructions

For this assignment you will write a paper of 5 to 7 pages based on the case, Carolinas Healthcare System: Consumer Analytics. In your paper, you will develop your analysis and recommendation for action. Your paper must cover the following key topics:

•             Challenges and opportunity

•             Data that is known and unknown

•             How the data supports the proposed plan of action

•             Relevant supporting data presented clearly and with visuals

1.            Executive Summary

An executive summary is a brief synopsis of a paper or report. It is a helpful tool that allows readers to see a snapshot of what will be discussed in the paper. Your executive summary should not include detailed information, but simply present an overview of your position.

2.            Data Analytics and CHS’s Mission

a.            Why has CHS invested in Data Analytics? How does this support its strategic roadmap and its mission?

b.            How successful has it been so far? Explain with specific reference to the pilot programs that have been implemented.

c.             How has the balance between patient confidentiality and actionable data been managed? Has this been effective? Explain.

3.            Data Missing from the Case

a.            What other data items could be helpful to CHS that were NOT presented and considered in the case? Describe how this data could have been collected, and explain what additional insight such data might have provided.

i.              What data would you recommend for additional consideration?

ii.             How could that data have been collected?

iii.            How would you recommend researchers to analyze that data? (refer to specific analytical tools or approaches)

b.            Create a visual chart or graphic that could be used to display the missing data described above – i.e., a data set that you wish had been included in the case, but was not. You may create the sample data you need to populate your visual chart or graphic, or you may select similar data available for another healthcare institution.

4.            Recommendation

a.            What are Dulin’s key issues going forward?

i.              What role does patient confidentiality play in each of these issues?

ii.             Based on the case, as well as your own research, what organizations are best positioned to provide integrated data management for individual patients?

b.            What recommendation(s) would you offer to Dulin and his team? Include the main steps of an action plan that can be used to implement your recommendation(s).

c.             How will the success of your recommendation(s) be assessed? Be specific about:

i.              Cost assumptions that need to be included

ii.             How return on investment (ROI) should be measured
