Evaluate a team meeting with the following process:

1.Search for a team meeting at your clinical facility.

2.Ask to sit in as an observer for approximately one hour.

3.Use the team evaluation checklist that is attached to assess the group’s communication.

4. Respond briefly to the items on the checklist by reflecting on your observations of the group.

5. Reflect on ways in which areas could be improved.

6.Include in your assessment: the general communication network utilized at the institution and/or the team and the roles that each of the team members play in the meeting.

Step 1: Contact a unit manager to interview. If you are in long-term care or in community nursing, you would need to contact the nurse who is responsible for managing staff. If you are a unit manager, contact one of your peers so you have a different perspective than your own about the management of care.

Step 2: Obtain job descriptions for each of the staff on the unit.

Step 3: Interview the nurse manager to obtain the following information:

Patient acuity level

Staff mix and their typical job responsibilities in the model of care that is utilized

Typical staff-to-patient ratio and are there shift variations

Delegation responsibilities of the staff (what can be delegated and to whom)

How staffing needs are determined

FTEs needed to staff the unit/area (is the unit fully staffed or are their openings and, if so, how many and in what positions)

Who schedules staff

Any specific tools utilized to reduce the length of stay and reduce cost

Step 4: If there is additional information that you would like to obtain, that can be added to the questions posed during the interview.

Step 5: Compile the information you have obtained. Compare it to the recommendations of the IOM report and the staffing ratios proposed by National Nurses United (please note that there are several clickable resources on this page). Reflect on the information: What do you think is positive and would be significant for quality improvement? What are your recommendations for changes? Are the nurses functioning within their job description?
