You have been working toward completion of this assignment throughout all the previous sessions of this course. It’s time to finish construction of your critical review of a history of your denomination or Gaustad & Schmidt, The Religious History of America. The purpose of this reading and review is to put you in better touch with your own church heritage.
Here are the parameters of the review assignment.
The review should be four to six pages in length (double-spaced, Turabian style), containing the following material:
A brief summary (no more than two pages) of the book’s contents;
A short history of your involvement in the denomination. For example, how long you have been a member in the denomination (not necessarily how long you have been a member in your current church, though they may be the same) or, if you choose Gaustad & Schmidt, a statement of the authors’ purpose and the extent to which they fulfilled it;
A statement describing the personal appeal of your denomination, stating why you are and continue to be a member or if you choose Gaustad & Schmidt, a statement regarding the book’s uniqueness (i.e., how is this book unique among books written on this same topic?);
A concluding evaluation, stating what you learned about your denomination through this book and how the book affected your opinion about your denomination or, if you choose Gaustad & Schmidt, a concluding evaluation, addressing the book’s effect on your opinions regarding significant characters and signal events in American religious history.
