Guidelines for the PersuasiveEssay
Development and Unity
• Has an introduction that begins with a hook and introduces the topic and thesis in interesting manner.
• Has a thesis statement in the introduction that clearly states the writer’s position on the topic and is clearly and consistently supported throughout the essay.
(Remember a thesis is a bold assertion, a claim, a position, and thesis must be a debatable point. An opinion or a statement of fact is not a thesis.)
• Has supporting paragraphs that are unified and support the thesis with logical arguments.
• Each body paragraph contains a topic sentence with a controlling idea, supporting sentences that give reasons, explanations, evidence and examples and a concluding sentence that sums up the main idea of the paragraph and/or transitions to the idea in the next paragraph.
• Counterarguments are acknowledged and refuted in the essay. (The essay must include at least one counterargument and refutation.)
• The essay does not contain anything that the audience might find offensive.
Coherence
• Uses key nouns, consistent pronouns, transitions, and arranges ideas in a logical order to achieve coherence.
Style
• Usesperson, language register, and good, precise vocabulary appropriate for audience and the writing task.
Clarity
• The essay has been carefully proofread.
• The sentences are grammatically correct.
• The punctuation is correct, and there are few or no spelling errors.
Your essay should be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and standard margins. The copy that will be handed in to me should follow the format below:

You will be graded on both drafts of your essay. You will revise your first draft next week to submit your final draft. Your first draft is worth 100 points, and the final draft is worth 100. Together, this assignment is worth a total of 200 points. For the first draft, you will be scored on “Development/Organization” only. For the second draft, you will be scored on both “Development/Organization” and “Language Use/Mechanics.” Please see the rubric posted on D2L for additional information as to how you will be evaluated.

Choose one of following topics:
1. In some countries two years of military service is a requirement for all. In other words, military service is mandated or mandatory. In these countries, when citizens reach the age of eighteen, they must join a branch of the military and serve for two years. What do you think? Should two years of military service be mandated? Write an essay in which you try to convince your peers to think as you do about two years of mandatory military service.
2. In the United States (the US), many parents give their children a weekly allowance. Some parents require their children to do chores to earn the allowance. Others do not. What do you think? Should children be required to do chores in order to receive an allowance? Write an essay in which you try to convince parents to think as you do.
3. Many colleges require students to take one fine arts course (history of art, music appreciation, music, painting, drawing, sculpting, introduction to theatre or film etc). Others do not require students to fine arts courses. What do you think? Write an essay in which you try to convince college students that a fine arts requirement is or is not a good idea in college.
4. In the past, all high school students were required to take physical education courses throughout high school. In an effort to reduce budgets and save money, some high schools have eliminated the physical education requirement. For various reasons, some parents and administrators agree with the elimination of this requirement, and others do not. What do you think? Write an essay in which you try to convince parents and administrators to think as you do about mandatory physical education in high schools.
You may want to use the mnemonic device FEESHES to help you brainstorm reasons to support your argument. It isalways best to include only the strongest arguments in your papers, not every idea you have brainstormed. Categorizing the reasons will help you organize your essay. Think about pathos, ethos, and logos.
