DQ1 After reading Chapter 1, we learn that some of the rights that were granted to LGBT (or LBGTQ) individuals and couples have been challenged since Donald Trump became president. Perhaps the challenge that will be the most important for HR in the coming years stems from the “Me Too” movement and the new spotlight on sexual harassment and sexual misconduct at work.
How do you think the “Me Too’ movement will affect HRM practices? Are they likely to be an long-term implications of this new focus on sexual misconduct?
DQ2 We read in the opening case of Chapter 1 that at first glance, Google, Hilcorp, and Quicken Loans appear to have little in common. But they do share a few things in common: They all have been cited as among the most admired companies in the United States by Fortune magazine, they routinely appear on lists of the best places to work, and they are consistently profitable. They invest heavily in attracting the best employees and then work diligently to train them and offer them rewarding career opportunities. They pay well, offer good benefits, and strive to make their employees feel valued. The bottom line is that while there are many routes to business success, treating employees well is often the best way to go.
If you were starting a new business, what kind of relationship would you want to have with your employees? How would you go about trying to achieve this?

DQ1 This week, we learned about the legal and global environments and how the Human Resources department can play key roles in both areas.
Which do you think is more critical for international HRM: understanding the cultural environment or understanding the political and legal environment?
Defend your answer with at least one (1) outside source.
DQ2 Read ‘Should Startups Consider Doing Business in Canada?’
The article discusses that there are both strengths and weaknesses to doing business in Canada, as there are in business operations in any country. However, the weaknesses are fairly mild compared to the potential benefits. If the access to Canadian demographics is particularly appealing to you, you should definitely consider making a move. The lower corporate tax rate, steady economic growth, familiarity and access to entrepreneurial hubs are just icing on the cake for bold entrepreneurs.
If you had the opportunity to expand a current business or start a new business, would you expand to Canada?
Defend your answer with at least one (1) outside source.

DQ1 Business magazines and newspapers regularly publish articles about the changing nature of work in the United States and about how many jobs are being changed. Because so much has been made of the shift toward service-sector and professional jobs, many people might assume that the number of unpleasant and undesirable jobs has declined. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. While many Americans work in gleaming air-conditioned facilities, millions of others work in dirty, grimy, unsafe settings.
Consider the jobs in a chicken-processing facility. Much like a manufacturing assembly line, a chicken-processing facility is organized around a moving conveyor system. Even the titles of the jobs are unsavory. The work is obviously distasteful, and the pace of the work is unrelenting. In some plants, taking an unauthorized bathroom break can result in suspension without pay. Besides being unpleasant and dirty, many jobs in a chicken-processing plant are dangerous and unhealthy. The work space itself is so tight that the workers often cut themselves—and sometimes their coworkers—with the knives, scissors, and other instruments they use to perform their jobs. Jobs such as these in the chicken-processing facility are actually becoming increasingly common.
Are dirty, dangerous, and unpleasant jobs an inevitable part of any economy?
DQ2 Table 6.2 in the book lists several kinds of behaviors that will typically warrant punishment or discipline. Some behaviors, such as theft or sexual harassment, are likely to lead to immediate dismissal. But others, such as problems with performance or problems with attendance, may be correctable with the right programs on the part of the organization.
Discuss the process of progressive discipline, what it is and explain its importance to organizations.

DQ1 Chapter 8 discusses how we manage a new and diverse workforce and how companies need to adapt accordingly.
Identify and discuss various individual strategies for managing diversity.
DQ2 It is common in interviews to be asked what your short-term and long-term career goals are. At which point, it might be informative if it is shared that you would like to have an international assignment as part of your career. What issues and concerns might you have about such a possibility?

Module 6 Discussion
DQ1 For decades, negotiations about individual wages and salaries were typically handled in a meeting between the employee and his or her manager. The same approach was used both for individuals who were being offered their first job with the company and for existing employees who felt they deserved a raise. But in both cases, the supervising manager and the organization itself usually had the upper hand. To make things worse (for the employee), locating this kind of information was difficult. National and regional data were sometimes published in government reports, but the information was often dated and/or incomplete. But the Internet has rapidly changed all that. For instance, several free websites now provide salary information for interested parties. It seems like the Internet will be playing a major role from now on in the kinds of wages and salaries that employees expect and that companies pay.
Do you think there drawbacks to using the Internet to search for salary information? Why or why not?
DQ2 The chapter discusses that there are benefits mandated by law and other benefits not mandated by law. Health insurance is one benefit that is not mandated by law.
Do you think health insurance should be mandated by law? Yes or No.

Module 7 Discussion
DQ1 60 percent of HR executives are satisfied with the work–life services that their companies offer employees. The bad news is that only 16 percent of their employees agree with them. According to a study conducted by the Corporate Executive Board (CEB), a global network of business professionals, the disconnect results from the fact that HR managers tend to value different services than employees do. More than 60 percent of the 50,000 workers polled in the CEB study specified flextime schedules as the single most important work–life benefit that an employer can offer.
How much value would you put on work–life balance? Do you think this varies for different people? What do you do (or what will you do if you haven’t yet started your career) to achieve a balance between work and life?
DQ2 Once upon a time “going to work” meant getting dressed in appropriate attire at a predetermined time, driving or using public transportation to get to an office or other work site, and staying there for a predetermined period of time before returning home. But for some people today, “going to work” may mean slipping into shorts and t-shirt and walking down the hall to their home office. More and more organizations are allowing employees to work from home on at least an occasional basis. The general term for this practice is telecommuting. On the plus side, many employees like telecommuting because it gives them added flexibility. Organizations may benefit for several reasons as well: (1) they can reduce absenteeism and turnover since employees will need to take less “formal” time off, and (2) they can save on facilities such as parking spaces because fewer people will be at work on any given day.
Answer the following questions:
Which do you think you would personally prefer, working in an office all the time, working from home all the time, or a mix of working at an office and home? Why?
What complications might exist for a manager whose employees work from home all or part of the time?
