PHI-105 Persuasive Essay Guidelines
Topics 1-7: Full-Course Assignment
1) Throughout this course, you will work on writing a five-paragraph persuasive essay of 750–1,000 words.
2) The essay-writing process is broken down into seven parts. Each part will be due in a different topic and graded separately.
a) Topic and Audience (due by the end of Topic 1)
b) Brainstorm (due by the end of Topic 2)
c) Thesis Statement (due by the end of Topic 3)
d) Outline (due by the end of Topic 4)
e) First Draft (due by the end of Topic 5)
f) Peer Review (due by the end of Topic 6)
g) Final Draft (due by the end of Topic 7)
3) Your essay will be informed by the topic readings and the use of a minimum of three peer-reviewed journal articles, that you will need to locate using the GCU Library. Use the PHI-105 Library Guide to find peer-reviewed sources: https://libguides.gcu.edu/PHI-105
4) For this essay, you will begin by choosing a topic from the list provided in the “Persuasive Essay: Topic and Audience Worksheet.” If you would like to write about a topic that is not on the list, you may propose it within the worksheet.
5) Next, take a position on your topic by deciding if you are for or against the topic or agree or disagree with specific issues related to the topic. This would be considered the “argumentative position.” This position should be an informed decision. Demonstrate clarity and logic when contemplating the most logical position to take within an argument in the topic selected.
6) The goal of this essay is for you to persuade your audience to agree with your position. Your written essay should demonstrate critical inquiry strategies by adhering to the following critical thinking principles which will be studied throughout the course:
a) Manage emotions and avoid fallacies.
b) Provide a synthesis of facts and evidence to support your position based on historical current, reliable and valid information.
c) Acknowledge other perspectives and evaluate assumptions about the topic.
7) Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
8) This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Use the Persuasive Essay Outline on the next page to outline your persuasive essay by completing the following:
1) Use the feedback you received from your instructor to revise your thesis statement.
a) Write your thesis as a complete sentence (as you would in your essay) in the “Thesis Sentence” section under the Introductory Paragraph heading in the outline below.
2) Create a topic sentence for each of the three paragraphs that comprise the body of your essay.
a) Record the topic sentences in each of the “Topic Sentence” sections under the “Support for Thesis” headings in the outline below.
b) Your topic sentences should be persuasive in nature and support your thesis.
3) Write at least three details for each topic sentence.
a) These details should provide support for the topic sentence.
b) Remember to include at least one in-text citation for each supporting paragraph.
c) Paraphrasing is preferred, use direct quotes minimally (0-3 direct quotes for entire document. Each 40 or less words in length).
4) Write a concluding sentence under the “Conclusion” heading in the outline below.
a) Your concluding sentence should be your thesis restated in different words.
5) Make sure to complete reference portion of the outline.

Persuasive Essay Outline
Introductory Paragraph:
Hook: Medical marijuana is a treatment that could be used for adolescent and adult patients.
Background and contextual information: The first medical marijuana law was passed in California in 1996 and other states by 2015. At that time patients had started being treated with medical marijuana. (Jergins, 2022)
Thesis Sentence: Marijuana should be legalized for its pain treatment, increase in medical purposes, and reduction of illegal activity.
Supporting paragraph 1 (Subtopic 1)
(Make sure to include at least one in-text citation from your research within your details)
Persuasive Topic Sentence (include position and align with first subtopic): Medical marijuana covers a wide range of pain management that focus mostly on adults.
Detail A: It has been known and stated that since the start of the medical marijuana laws there has been a reduction in prescribing opioids for pain.
Detail B: Medical marijuana could be given in many ways: topical, smoked, oral, and vaporized.
Detail C: With medical marijuana professionals in the field are looking to provide patients with improved care and significant information. (Rosi & Sorbello, 2019)
Transitional sentence: Medical marijuana gives patients options with pain medications and the kind that would work better with them instead of only having the option of opioids.
Supporting paragraph 2 (Subtopic 2)
(Make sure to include at least one in-text citation from your research within your details)
Persuasive Topic Sentence (include position and align with second subtopic): Marijuana could help improve chronic pain, nausea, and muscle spasms.
Detail A: There has been a rise in the need of medicinal marijuana in the last ten years with all aspects for pain management practices. (Rosi & Sorbello, 2019)
Detail B: There are many forms of marijuana that help aid in pain management. It is also important to make sure you are receiving the right dosage and making sure it starts off low.
Detail C: It is recommended that patients try the different avenues of marijuana to see which would help relieve the pain they are having.
Transitional sentence: Marijuana does not only help with pain relief but it also helps with the withdrawals from opioids related to nausea, seizures, and lack of sleep.
Supporting paragraph 3 (Subtopic 3)

Persuasive Topic Sentence (include position and align with third subtopic): Legalization of marijuana has decreased some of the illegal activity associated with it.
Detail A: Marijuana arrests were down across the United States in 2020 significantly according to the FBI data recently. (Jaeger, 2021)
Detail B: With marijuana legalization many have asked would it replace alcohol use or used in addition to alcohol.
Detail C: Legalization of medical and recreational marijuana was passed for adults 21 years of age between 1996 and 2021.
Transitional Sentence: Legalization of marijuana could help the economy when it comes to less crowded jails and tax revenue. Legalization of marijuana and especially medical marijuana helps more patients with chronic illnesses and pain.
Conclusion
Paraphrase thesis statement (restated in different words): Marijuana legalization will help with tax revenue, chronic illnesses with patients while giving them a variety of options related to medical marijuana and the forms of how they would be able to intake the marijuana.
Summarize main points: Pain management could be better controlled with medical marijuana. Legalization of marijuana could help reduce some of the criminal illegal activity that leads to arrest.
Final remarks: Legalization of marijuana could help reduce the crime rates in really high drug areas in different communities. It will also help with the overcrowding of jails related to marijuana arrest.
