The interior of aneuron at rest consists of negative protein ions which do not leave the cell and positive potassiumions (K+) while the outside contains positive sodium ions (Na+) (Breedlove & Watson, 2019).The cells interior consists of more negatively charged ions compared to the cell’s exterior, a cellsresting membrane potential is said to fall between -50 and -80 millivolts which demonstrates thecell interiors negative polarity (Breedlove & Watson, 2019). Within a neuron at rest mostchannels are closed with the exclusion of those permeable to potassium, allowing them to passfreely in and out, and few sodium channels which only allow a select amount of sodium ions in(Breedlove & Watson, 2019). The resting potential is influenced by electrostatic pressure anddiffusion which take on a balancing act, counteracting one another to drive potassium ions in andout as needed to maintain the electrical balances (Breedlove & Watson, 2019). Diffusion pushespotassium ions down their concentration gradients to the exterior while electrostatic pressurepushes them back in when the inside of the cell becomes more negative (Breedlove & Watson,2019). Eventually, the potassium ions passing in and out balance to reach equilibrium (Breedlove& Watson, 2019).
