1. Books of Hebrews
Traditionally ascribed to Paul, Hebrews is considered annonymous by scholars, and further thought to have been written between 60-90 AD. A word you should remember is “exhortation” and its other forms, such as exhortatory. It reads like a sermon, and indeed, another word you should remember is “kerygma”, which is the Greek for proclamation.
ALthough not limited to Hebrews, I am pointing our a literary device called “inclusio”, which is similar to “envelope structure”, meaning that there is some passage framed by similar opening and closing lines. In Hebrew, 1:5-13 is an example of this. See if you can note other instances of inclusio as you read.
Chapter 3 makes a very subtle point about “works.” What is God’s point (and notice who is speaking),?
What do you make of 4:12-13?
How about 5:5-6? 7:1-3? Compare with Genesis 14:17-20
Here are three additional words, from the Greek you should know:
Metanoia- repentence
Harmartia- sin (you should know this already)
Soteria-salvation.
Chapter 11 is important; why?
What is significant in chapter 13?
2. The revelation to John
Oh boy, what a way to end the New Testament! Just as the Book of Daniel is the only apocalpytic book in the Old Testament, Revelation is the only apocalyptic book in the New Testament, therefore, you should not be surprised that there is a lot of allusion back to Daniel and Ezekiel.
What is significant about the opening to this book?
So much to comment on in terms of symbols and allusions; see if you can interpret some of them.
Angels, Horsemen, Lamb, trumpets, Pregnant woman, dragon, the war in heaven, bowls, new heaven, new earth, but also notice what you might NOT find, such as Rapture?
