It is estimated that half of children in the US between ages 1-5 have lead in their blood which causes damage to the nervous system, stunts growth, causes headaches, hearing problems, anemia, and can lead to seizures, coma or even death (Stanford Medicine, 2022). This younger age group is a high risk due to their young developing nervous system, and there is no determined safe blood level (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Lead is either inhaled, or more commonly, ingested orally by touching objects with lead and putting hands in the mouth (Stanford Medicine, 2022). Lead can be found in paint, airplane fuel, soil, pipes, jewelry, and stained glass (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). The state of Illinois has a lead exposure screening tool used by pediatricians that asks the following questions:
- Does the child live with another who has a blood lead level of 10mcg/dl or greater?
- Does the child live in a home built before 1978?
- Has the child been exposed to repairs or renovations of a house built before 1978?
- Is the child a refugee or adopted from another country?
- Has the child been to a country where they may have been exposed to lead-based products?
- Does the child live with someone who works with lead?
- Does the child live near a factory that uses lead?
- Does the child live in a high-risk zip code?
If any of these answers are yes, then a blood test is indicated to check for lead levels. Screening is necessary because not all children exhibit symptoms (Illinois Department of Public Health, 2022). Not only are children at risk, but pregnant women who are exposed to lead put their unborn child at risk of poisoning, so it important for them to avoid lead as well (Illinois Department of Public Health, 2022). In the state, we need to inform child-care facilities and schools if children are exposed. There is even a brief screening on the school physical form. If children are on Medicaid or All Kids insurance, then they are required to have lead testing at 12 and 24 months regardless of other screening questions and all testing results are reported to the state, including older children and adults (Illinois Department of Public Health, 2022).
