From the ten-step strategic planning process, the two that I found most interesting are steps nine and ten. Step nine is Developing an Effective Implementation Process which entails assessing readiness, getting organized, clarifying direction, and esourcing and structuring implementation, alignment and ongoing learning. Step ten is Reassessing Strategies and the Strategic Planning Process which entails strategy maintenance, change, or termination, and strategic management system design.
The reason I found these two steps most interesting is because there is nothing more fascinating to me than being able to see the end result and whether the initial plan worked or not. Also, being able to witness whether or not major adjustments needed to be made. “Successful implementation and institutionalized strategies result in the establishment of a new regime.” (Bryson, 2011) Once implementation has begun, being able to measure the strategies in an ongoing effort to determine if the new regime will become a temporary permanent part of the process is so interesting. I say temporary permanent because the only thing that stays the same is change. I have learned about and have become accustomed to change early on in my career because at first, it was very stressful to undergo change. I learned to accept it and that takes the stress away. I found clarifying mission and values and reassessing the strategies the most interesting concepts of the ten-step strategic planning process. To start, organizations and leaders must set the precedent by establishing a mission and vision statement. These are guides for leaders and individual contributors to focus on for a baseline when making decisions and planning purposes. If these statements are not clear, concise, and to the point, employees will not have a solid foundation to build upon. These mission and vision statements allow an organization to focus on the tasks and goals that align with mission success. Without clear guidelines, an organization can get off track or focus on initiatives and priorities that are a waste of time and energy because they do not coincide with plan for future successes. Also, reassessing the strategies after implementation gives the organization a chance to reflect on what is going well and what is not going so well. When implemented plans are not as successful as hoped, they must immediately be scrapped and revisited for planning purposes and redeployment. Learning and ensuring that everyone understands what went wrong is an unbelievably valuable experience that happens during planning and implementation. These learned lessons will be the catalyst for future decision making because the more informed and more experience an organization has from previously established plans can make for better decisions in the future. Organizations that can clearly define the mission and are constantly learning from past decisions can refine processes, and refine processes, while evolving with external forces. External forces can drastically affect an organization if the business doesn’t constantly refine it’s processes to maintain with the constant change in business; whether that be a small startup business or a huge global conglomerate.
