Week 2 Discussion
DQ1 Feasibility
Read the following resources from the University Library:
“Developing a Researchable Question” in Project Planner
“Eleven Pitfalls in Qualitative Research: Some Perils Every Emerging Scholar and Doctoral Student Should Be Aware of”
“Develop a Search Strategy: Choose a Topic” > “Your Topic – Too Much? Not Enough?”
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
What is your dissertation topic or potential topic?
Is your dissertation topic/idea feasible? Does your topic fall into one of the areas of being too broad, too narrow, or too recent? If so, present some ideas on what you might consider to achieve a feasible research study.
DQ2 Institutional Review Board and Research Ethics
Part 1: Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Visit CDS Central and review the information under the IRB tab.
Select Registering for IRB in the IRB Resources table and follow the steps to register.
Once you have registered with IRB, download the What is Research? document at the end of the list of Forms and Templates.
As the first part of your response, describe in your own words (approximately 150–200 words) what research is and explain if your study will involve human subjects.
Part 2: Research Ethics
The development of the field of ethics in research includes numerous historical atrocities and egregious breaches of humane ethical values.
For the second part of your response, research “historical atrocities and research ethics” and share one historical violation that prompted the implementation of ethical standards in research (approximately 150-200 words).

Week 3 Discussion
DQ1 Researchable Problem
Review the following resources:
Ch. 2, “Do You Have an Idea for a Topic?” of Writing Your Doctoral Dissertation or Thesis Faster: A Proven Map to Success from the Week 2 University Library readings
“Strategies to Win: Six-Steps for Creating Problem Statements in Doctoral Research” and Ch. 3, “Do You Have Some Idea How You Will Study Your Topic? Bridging Topic and Methods,” of Writing your Doctoral Dissertation or Thesis Faster: A Proven Map to Success from this week’s University Library readings
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
How does a researcher find a researchable problem?
What differentiates a problem from a situation or a statement of opinion or fact?
Why is the problem statement one of the most important components of a doctoral dissertation?
DQ2 Problem Statement Peer-Review
A peer-review process provides doctoral students opportunities to explore their own ideas and thoughts as well as assisting their peers by providing substantive feedback and critical thinking questions and ideas.
View “Alignment of Dissertation Topic to Degree Program” and the Week 3 Overview.
Using the Problem Statement Worksheet, write a 1-sentence original problem for a prospective study you might conduct using the format below:
The problem is _____(state the problem), resulting in ______(state the consequence).
The problem statement sentence must be substantiated with literature to confirm that the problem exists and is more than just your personal opinion or perspective. Cite using a peer reviewed source published between 2017-2022.Include a citation to support the problem and provide a reference.

Week 4 Discussion
DQ1 Purpose Statement Peer-Review
A peer-review process provides doctoral students opportunities to explore their own ideas and thoughts as well as assisting their peers by providing substantive feedback and critical thinking questions and ideas.
Complete the Purpose Statement Worksheet.
Post your revised problem statement from Week 3 along with a proposed purpose statement for your study.
DQ2 Research Alignment
Read this week’s overview on research alignment.
Write a 250- to 300-word reflective statement in which you describe and evaluate what you learned about research alignment with responses to the following:
How confident are you that your purpose statement aligns with your problem statement?
Reflecting on the weekly overview, what are the specific elements from your problem statement that are carried over to your purpose statement?

Week 5 Discussion
DQ1 Research Questions Versus Interview Questions
Review the weekly overview and reflect on the topic of research questions.
Your research question describes the issue you want to learn about, but you rarely can learn about that issue by asking others that same question.
A research question is broad but specific and should clearly address the topic and the population being studied. It should also be practical and demonstrate the action you are doing.
If your question can only provide a yes/no answer, is too general, or is not feasible, it isn’t a good research question. An example of a poorly written research question might be: What is the role of the nurses in the operating room?
Research questions are not interview questions.
Research Question Example: How do families with school-age children prepare them to be ready for school?
Interview Question Example: How do you get your children ready for school?
That might be all you have to say to learn about how people prepare their kids for school, but you can add probes like: Tell me more about… or you mentioned… or can you give me an example?
You never want to ask a yes/no question in an interview because the response will not provide any reliable data to analyze.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
What is the purpose of research questions?
How are research questions different from interview questions?
How are research questions aligned with the purpose statement?
DQ2 Research Question Peer-Review
A peer-review process provides doctoral students opportunities to explore their own ideas and thoughts as well as assisting their peers by providing substantive feedback and critical thinking questions and ideas.
Locate 2 dissertations in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global that are focused on your topic. Review the research question(s) in both dissertations to assist in gaining an understanding of how to write your research question(s) for this assignment.
Include links to the dissertations you located and provide References.
Post your purpose statement and two research questions that might be appropriate for your study.

Week 6 Discussion
DQ1 Distinguishing Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods
Read the materials for the week, including the weekly overview.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
Describe qualitative and quantitative research methods.
What is the purpose for each method?
What might be some challenges in using each method?
DQ2 Searching ProQuest Database
Visit ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database.
In the search bar, type in a keyword or phrase related to your topic and check the “Doctoral dissertations only” box.
In the left-hand margin narrow the Publication date to the last 5 years (2017-2022).
Locate one qualitative and one quantitative dissertation.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
Describe how a doctoral researcher justified the chosen research method in their dissertation.
Provide a discussion on the method you are proposing and why that method might be the best approach.

Week 7 Discussion
DQ1 Selecting a Research Design
Review pp. 11-20 of Ch. 1, “The Selection of a Research Approach,” of Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches and the CDS Dissertation Guide.
Provide a minimum 250- to 300-word substantive response on the difference between a research method and a research design. Then list three quantitative and three qualitative research designs and briefly explain each one.
Choose one potential research design and discuss how this design might be appropriate for your study. Be sure to include APA in-text citations and references from the weekly overview as well as other sources.
DQ2 Applied Research Designs
Review the information on Research Designs in the CDS Dissertation Guide.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
How might one of the applied research designs presented in the Dissertation Guide be appropriate for your research plan?
Be sure to substantiate your discussion using peer-reviewed literature and provide proper citations and references according to APA guidelines.
RES709 Research Conceptualization And Design
Week 8 Discussion
DQ1 Framework
View the “Developing a Conceptual or Theoretical Framework” tutorial.
Note: A transcript of the video is available.
Every dissertation needs to have a theoretical foundation and/or a conceptual framework discussion in the literature review section. The theoretical framework will be the lens (perspective) through which you evaluate your research problem and research questions. While a theoretical framework is typically required for quantitative studies, a conceptual framework can be used in qualitative studies. Yet, both theoretical and conceptual frameworks can be used for either quantitative or qualitative studies, depending on the theorist.
You may find it helpful to review some completed dissertations, as you did in Week 6, to gain thoughts and ideas.
Write a substantiated 250- to 300-word response to the following:
State your updated problem statement.
State a theory and/or concept that is applicable to your research and explain how that theory or concept would frame your research.
DQ2 Significance of the Study
Consider the significance or importance of your study using the SPL Model as a foundation.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
How might your study be significant for the scholarly community?
How might your study be significant for practitioners in your field of study?
How might your study be significant for leaders in your field of study?
Be sure to substantiate your discussion using peer-reviewed literature and provide proper citations and references according to APA guidelines.
