One of the biggest topics that rises to the presidential levels is the opioid epidemic. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an unprecedented increase in the use of opioid pain relievers has led to one of the worst drug overdose epidemics in US history and continues to be an ongoing major public health crisis (Jannetto, 2021). From the research I have found between the current president and the last two, they all agreed to provide a funding opportunity to help address the opioid epidemic. One way President Obama handled the problem was by budgeting $1 billion in new mandatory funding over two years to expand access to treatment for prescription drug abuse and heroin use. What he did with the money is fund it three ways with one of the three parts was $920 million was to be used to expand access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders and spread the money by the severity of the epidemic among the states and on the strength of their strategy to respond to it (The White House, 2016). When President Trump was in office, he also had millions raised towards the epidemic that were spread among treatment centers, law enforcement, first responders and other programs to help stop the spread of overdoses. One thing I would do differently is I did not any research on how any presidents had strategies of early prevention. I’m sure schools and work places provide education on opioids and how not to get addicted, but more states need to have support groups before one gets out of hand and overdoses. Treatment centers and rehab are always going to be funded but they also could be pricey for someone to go which will be make people not get the help they need. With all the money funded, there needs to be more free community groups that work with people in the early developments of them becoming addicted to opioids. One example is Minnesota's 2012 State Substance Abuse Strategy, which includes a comprehensive strategy focused on strengthening prevention; creating more opportunities for intervening before problems become severe; integrating the identification and treatment of substance use disorders into health care reform efforts; expanding support for recovery; interrupting the cycle of substance use, crime, and incarceration; reducing trafficking, production, and sale of illegal drugs; and measuring the impact of various interventions (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2016).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Top of Form
The population health topic that rises to the presidential agenda level that I want to talk about for this week's discussion is mental health. Mental health is our inner emotions and social well-being. Mental health affects our thinking, feeling, act toward others and ourselves. Mental health is a correspondingly important element of overall health. Therefore, mental health needs the same attention and care as any other health issue like Diabetes, heart attack, etc. According to Healthy People 2020, Mental health disorders are a concern for people of all ages, from early childhood through old age. Approximately 20% of U.S. children and adolescents are affected by mental health disorders during their lifetime. Often, symptoms of anxiety disorders emerge by age 6, behavior disorders by age 11, mood disorders by age 13, and substance use disorders by age 15. An estimated 26% of Americans aged 18 and older are living with a mental health disorder in any given year, and 46% will have a mental health disorder over their lifetime. Social elements affect mental health, including race and ethnicity, age, income and education level, family, the environment where a person grows up, and many more.
The way recent presidents handle mental health issues is different. President Trump's plan to revoke against Affordable Care Act (ACA) would have left most mental health patients with no coverage. Also, he planned to cut total funding for substance Abuse and Mental Health services administration. President Trump did not have a plan for individual Americans with mental health issues, though he did have a program for veterans. On the other hand, President Biden's administration wants to expand on the funding and implement more education for healthcare professionals, including psychologists, counselors, and many to help people with mental health. Both Trump and Biden did agree on paying extra attention to veterans. Trump signed an executive order calling his administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to end suicide among veterans in 2019. President Biden is planning to expand on this bill for the veterans.
Mental health is a severe condition that needs to be taken seriously, just like any other health condition. I am not sure if I will do anything different from what President Biden is doing regarding mental health. I will add that families and the community should be involved in mental education so that they can recognize the early signs of mental health so that the approach to treatment can start sooner.
