Many states have passed legislation requiring certified nurses to assist as first responders in emergencies. According to Florida law, certified medical practitioners who desire to administer emergency first aid must do so for free and under the auspices of an organization such as the American Red Cross (Disaster Nursing & Emergency preparedness 2022). According to Section 5 of the Code, the nurse owes the same obligation to herself as she does to others. This conflict of responsibility is most evident during disasters, when nurses are forced to care for critically ill or injured patients for lengthy periods of time (Who Will Be There?). I am not too familiar with the laws in my state but I can look them up.

Florida faces various disaster situations periodically. Among the most common disasters are hurricanes and storms. Therefore, disaster preparedness is necessary to ensure stakeholders are ready to save lives and property when disasters strike (Gable et al., 2021). Usually, when such situations come, the state encounters the overstretching of available resources like supplies and personnel. Therefore, like other states, the state has laws determining people’s responsibilities when disasters strike. According to the state laws, unlike other states that may require nurses and other important personnel to participate in rescue, Florida requires that nurses’ involvement in the operations be voluntary (Adelman et al., 2019). The state understands how important nurses are in such situations and recognizes that they must be encouraged to participate in a coordinated way to ensure that the processes are as efficient as possible. However, according to Florida laws, any registered nurse seeking to help people during disasters should participate in any emergency response organizations that will be working at the time. Therefore, from the laws, RNs are not allowed to work alone. They should also expect to work without pay since their work is volunteering.
RNs are not contractually bound to respond to disaster situations. The lack of contractual obligations means that professionals can only participate when they want. If they do not participate, there are no adverse legal consequences that the state laws prescribe. Those who participate should do so without being forced. The law allows them to participate as first responders during disaster situations (Gable et al., 2021). Therefore, nurses play significant roles when disaster happens to respond quickly and save lives as long as they do it under the emergency response organizations available. Some organizations that nurses may participate in include Red Cross and others. The laws favor nurses because they also do not punish them for adverse occurrences during disasters unless there is proof that they were utterly careless.
