Analysis of Informal Assessment Procedures
Informal assessment procedures refer to non-structure methods an assessor applies to evaluate specific issues about the subject (Thomson et al., 2018). In a clinical setup, informal assessment procedures are the unstructured techniques for assessing the patient. One of the common ways through which informal assessment can be applied is when interviewing a patient without pre-set questions. The questions are generated based on the conversation between the assessor and the patient. The assessor may set only a few questions, but many are generated depending on the patient’s answers. In addition, informal assessment can be accomplished through observation. The assessor observes how the patient behaves and records the findings.
The first type of observation is the qualitative observation, a research technique involving collecting non-numerical data through sight, smell, touch, taste, or hearing (Holtrop et al., 2018). The second type of observation is the quantitative observation, which involves data analysis using numerical parameters. Holtrop et al. (2018) argue that quantitative observation is associated with quantifiable values. For example, doctors can use quantitative observation by measuring and recording a patient’s blood pressure over a specified period and analyzing the recorded data to make an informed judgment about the client’s blood pressure. An example of qualitative observation in a clinical setting is monitoring the behavioral changes of a patient undergoing behavioral therapy. A clinician can record the observed changes to judge whether the patient is responding to the treatment or not.
Direct observation enables the evaluator to collect more accurate and first-hand information from the subjects since there is no alteration of the environment, meaning that the subject being assessed will behave naturally (Galanti & Shaman, 2021). Situational tests enable an assessor to determine the subject’s capabilities since the assessment is built around a hypothetical situation. For example, a subject may be required to rank five specific actions for solving a particular problem based on their effectiveness. Environmental assessment helps avoid inconveniences by determining the impacts of actions before the implementation.
