Have you experienced a situation in which strict adherence to rules led to a result that lacked common sense? How did you handle the situation? Or, how would you have handled it, if you had been in charge?
Ted (student): “Yes, many times. But while it may have lacked common sense, I do understand why the rules were upheld every time. It almost always (in my life) has come down to convience so the decision can be delegated to a previously created rubric. One example of this was a player skipping class, and before our big homecoming game being suspended because of a team rule that “if you don’t hold yourself to the standard to show up to class, you cannot play.” This was done by the leadership council of the team (all players) and it led to this player not playing in the game. On principle, it makes sense. But we were significantly worse because of the decision, and the coaches played no role in the decision. It was a bizarre deal because no one actually wanted to suspend the kid, but it happened because of a rule made in the offseason. This is a classic situation of people falling back to irrationally made rules because it is too time-consuming and hard to figure out the right thing to do at the moment. This world cannot work without rules, but they can be restricting. It is up to the leaders to decide when the rules MUST be breached. “
