Research Memo
For this assignment, you will practice your research skills and develop a research memo.
This assignment has the added benefit of helping you prepare your research for the Project #2. Your research should do three things in a proposal: establish background information, help you and your audience understand the problem, and support your proposed solution and plan.
Tasks/Deliverables
Begin your research by searching in some of the databases available in our RWS 390 Course Guide on the SDSU Library Website. You can choose from many databases here, but the ones that may be most helpful to you are BusinessSource Premeire and IBISWorld. You may also search for resources that are credible and reliable outside of these databases including web sites, books, and other sources. Please include the following in your memo:
- Standard memo format to your fellow group mates
- A brief introduction to describe the purpose of the memo and give a brief overview of the content. Please also explain your topic and intended audience here as well.
- Three reliable, credible sources. At least two of these sources must be from an academic database from the library. List each source in APA or MLA format and annotate it. Each annotation must:
- Summarize the main points of the source related to your proposal
- Describe how you might use this information in the proposal
- Include one quote from the source that might be useful for you.
- A brief conclusion that summarizes your findings and explains how this information will be useful to your report
- The document must be clear, thorough, proofread, and designed according to HATS.
- Remember each group member is responsible for conducting their own research an submitting their own document. This is not a group project.
Example
Here’s an example of what one good entry for the memo looks like. Remember you need to include at least three sources. Two sources must be from one of the SDSU Library databases.
SOURCE 1
Psychiatric researchers Guy Porter and Vladan Starcevic (2007) conducted a broad examination of the literature on video games and aggression. Their meta-analysis includes a study that found that adolescents who play violent video games also exhibit more hostility and aggressive behavior through fights, arguments, and poor school performance. The authors also reviewed studies involving individuals playing violent video games in a laboratory setting that demonstrate a connection between the video game play and aggressive feelings and behaviors. They conclude that while available evidence does not demonstrate a direct causal connection between violent play and violent acts, it does suggest that violent play has the potential to worsen “hostile” and “antisocial” personal traits in individuals already possessing violent tendencies.
I plan to use this source to support our proposed plan to tone-down or eliminate all violence and violent behavior from video games at Activision-Blizzard
“It is important to bear in mind that the debate about whether exposure to violent media leads to violent behaviour is not a new one. Research into the effects of TV and film violence has been around for over 50 years, with findings from hundreds of studies supporting a link between watching violence on screen and subsequent aggressive behaviour” (Porter & Starcevic, 2007, p. 467).
