What strategies does city government use to control Skid Row, and with what effects?
The answers to all the questions come from the material in the classroom, the movie, etc. You cannot directly copy and paste the original words, so please paraphrase before writing.
What is a short answer?
A short answer is one full paragraph that accomplishes a few things: first, you need to directly answer the question you are asked. If the question says, “Is it true that…” you need to respond, “Yes, it is true that…” or “No it is not true that…” Second, you need to be able to move back and forth from argument to details/facts/data. Can you give specific facts and details from this class to prove your point? You should not draw on outside sources. The whole point of an exam is to show you were paying attention to lectures, readings, assigned films, etc.
You should spend roughly 20 minutes writing (not researching!) your answer. This means that you do not have time to look at lecture slides, read course material, watch films, etc. once the test has begun. You must review in order to do well.
Question:
1.Explain the transformation of land use from Tongvan, Spanish, Mexican, and then US regimes. Be careful
not to slip into tropes about how Tongvan people were more connected to the land, etc. Instead, be
explicit about how different groups made use of the land, organized it, determined order in settlements
(vs. agricultural or livestock-raising areas), and determined title (who “owned” the land.)
2. Compare Yaanga with El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles. How did they emerge in
opposition or in conjunction with each other? Be as specific as you can.

different?

11. Would you characterize suburbanization as “white flight” after World War II? Include Watts, the Alameda,
Central Ave., Compton, East LA, San Fernando Valley, or Monterey Park in your answer. (On the actual
exam, I will choose which of these you are required to include; it won’t be all of them.)
12. What is the most important cause of Los Angeles becoming a “world city” instead of a “white spot”? Show
you read Kurashige in your answer.
13. How do freeways transform Los Angeles? Be as specific as possible and show you watched East LA
Interchange or Chavez Ravine in your answer. (I’ll choose one for the exam.)

recognize and explain the significance of case study houses.
15. Who was Paul Revere Williams, and why is he important to LA architectural history?
16. Did Chicanx students successfully “take back” the schools in 1968? What did they hope to achieve with
the walkouts, and did they achieve it?
17. When do Asian American enclaves appear, where, and why? Answer including K-town, Historic
Filipinotown, and Thai-town. (I’ll limit choices more on exam and I may ask you to demonstrate that you
read Shelley Lee.)
18. Are beach towns all the same? Show you understand the history and evolution of Malibu, Santa Monica,
