What does it take to be a level 5 leader?
Question 1 After watching the video for this week: What does it take to be a level 5 leader? Why are these leaders so rare? Have you ever met one of these leaders? If so, what were they like? If not, who would be a level 5 leader you would like to meet? And, How do you believe you could develop into a level 5 leader?
Question 2 The Benefits of the ACA (aka Obamacare)
The case briefly describes the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka Obamacare). This case specifically centers on two provisions of the ACA and Walmart’s reaction to the new law. The provisions are that as of January 2014, Americans must carry health insurance or face a tax penalty and that companies must offer health coverage to those who work at least 30 hours per week. Walmart, predictably cut all health care benefits for workers who worked fewer than 30 hours per week. Some experts see this as the first step toward moving away from employer provided healthcare.
Case Question: In your opinion, what kind of healthcare coverage does the average American worker (and his or her family) need? Is there any level of coverage to which, in your opinion, the average American worker should be entitled at a reasonable cost? What sources should provide the money to pay for this coverage?
Question 3 The case describes the state of satisfaction found in American workers. Using Gallup polls and survey results from The Conference Board Job Satisfaction report, shows only about 30 percent of workers are engaged in their work. The case provides an example of a typical employee and their reasons for dissatisfaction. Workers appear most dissatisfied with employers’ promotion policies and their bonus plans.
Case Question: What about Megan? First, draw up a list of jobs-dissatisfaction factors for Megan. Second, regard the following as applicable to Megan’s situation:
She likes the type of work she does and has good relationships with coworkers.
More than a few of her coworkers are also frustrated by the company’s tight supervision and demanding work schedule.
She is a cheerful and positive person.
She performs well and gets positive feedback because she looks for solutions to problems rather than dwelling on the negative aspects of things.
What do you think Megan should do? If you think that she should find another job, be prepared to explain why you think it’s the best move. If you think that she should try to resolve her frustrations before looking for another job, explain the points that she should try to get across in conversations with her boss.
Question 4 Engaged to Be Motivated
Using Gallup survey results, the closing case presents the argument that if you graduate from college you are less likely to be engaged in your work. While technically the statistics support this statement, the case outlines several related factors. Does the problem lie with colleges or with the workplace? Not surprisingly, the answer is both. Some feel this lack of engagement is a sign of students not planning a clear career path. Others feel engaging in one’s job is more of a personal decision.
Management Update: Ken Royal and Susan Sorenson write in Employees Are Responsible for Their Engagement Too, published in Business Journal, June 16, 2015, “You have a choice in how you respond to daily challenges, and if there’s nothing else you can change about a situation, at least you can choose your attitude and approach.”
Case Question: Consider each of the following perspectives on motivation, needs hierarchy (including the ERG theory), two-factor theory, expectancy theory, equity theory, and goal-setting theory. How does each of these perspectives depend upon learned motivation? On personal motivation?
Question 5 A Critique of Practical Leadership
The closing case describes ING Direct Canada, launched in 1997 by veteran Canadian banker Arkadi Kuhlmann. The new direct banking business model featured no-frills, high-rate savings accounts, only accessible online. Kuhlmann’s vision was to lead Americans back to saving and his mission was to simplify financial products. Kuhlmann believes a leader must be the driving force behind the company’s culture, saying: “I believe you need to direct the culture and let the culture direct the business.” He believes the culture is what attracts and keeps committed employees.
Management Update: ING Direct was bought by Capital One in 2012 and changed the company name to Capital One 360. The company was one of only a handful of banks that were included in the launch of Apple Pay in 2014.
Case Question: Review the definition and discussion of “The Organization’s Culture in the text. Then address the following question: What effect is a company’s culture likely to have on the efforts of management to practice each of the following approaches to leadership: LPC theory, path-goal theory, the decision tree approach, and the LMX model?
