TOPIC: Should people be restricted from travel in the context of COVID-19?
For this assignment, you’ll write an unbiased research paper comparing and contrasting at least two different viewpoints on a topic of your choice. Your essay should be approximately 1250 words plus a Works Cited page.
Use this strategy if your topic’s perspectives agree/disagree on the same points
The entire article needs at least 4 quality sources to talk about opinions.
I. INTRODUCTION
- Begin with a hook–A fact, statistic, etc. that engages the reader with the topic. Avoid beginning with a rhetorical question or personal anecdote.
- Now briefly provide context for the topic. Include only information that is needed for a basic understanding of the topic/thesis.
- Identify the specific controversy, problem, topic, or research question and its significance/relevance.
- State your thesis. Your thesis should forecast the focus and organization of the essay, as well as the perspectives that will be discussed.
- Transition into the first paragraph. Do not say “In this paper, I will discuss…” or “This paper will discuss…” as these phrases are vague and redundant. The thesis may also act as a transition in and of itself.
II. OPTIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION PARAGRAPH
- Begin with a topic sentence that introduces exactly what the paragraph will focus on.
- Provide information that readers will need to understand your paper. Make sure to only include information that supports the topic sentence for this paragraph.
- Transition into the next paragraph.
III. POINT ONE (Positive aspects of restricting travel)
- Begin with a clear topic sentence forecasting the focus of the paragraph. Which perspective/point will this paragraph focus on? Whose perspective is it? How is it related to the topic in the thesis?
- Present evidence and support with quotes and paraphrases from reliable sources. Remember to cite!
- Explicitly link claims and evidence back to thesis.
- Conclusion sentence that wraps up the paragraph and transitions into the next one.
IV. COUNTERPOINT ONE (Negative aspects of restricting travel)
- B egin with a clear topic sentence forecasting the focus of the paragraph. Which perspective/point will this paragraph focus on? Whose perspective is it? How does it respond to the perspective addressed in the previous paragraph?
- Present evidence and support with quotes and paraphrases from reliable sources. Remember to cite!
- Explicitly link claims and evidence back to thesis.
- Conclusion sentence that wraps up the paragraph and transitions into the next one.
V. CONCLUSION
- Restate the thesis in new terms. Briefly summarize and synthesize the overall conversation.
- Raise points or questions for further research on the topic.
- Leave readers understanding why this conversation matters. “So what?”
NOTE: Keep in mind that it’s possible you may need to dedicate more than one paragraph to each point/counterpoint.
NOTE: Include as many complete body paragraphs as needed.
