Essay #2: Cause and Effect (900 words)
For this essay, you will choose a specific event or decision in your own life or in the life of someone you know, and explain the causes and/or effects of that event or decision using vivid details and examples. For example, you could write about why you made the decision to attend college, the causes (or effects) of a marriage or a divorce, the causes of an act of courage or cowardice, the causes or effects of membership in a certain group (choir, band, sports team, church, gang), the reasons you decided to quit your full-time job and go back to school, or the effects of a certain event such as the death of a loved one, a medical diagnosis, or a move to a new place.
The possible topics are nearly endless, but do not write about the causes of divorce in general or the effects of smoking for people in general or about a hypothetical situation of what could possibly happen if you decide to take a certain job. This essay should be about an event or decision that has happened in the past or that you’re in the middle of experiencing right now. As you structure your paper, be sure to include specific examples that illustrate your points of cause or effect.
Important Advice:
Don’t turn your paper into a narrative. In other words, don’t tell a story from beginning to end. You can avoid creating a narrative by forming clear, straightforward topic sentences that state the cause or effect you will explain in that paragraph. Most importantly, be sure to include a thesis that explains the event or decision and indicates whether you will be talking about causes or effects (or possibly both).
Lastly, please do not use any outside sources for this essay. It should be about a specific event in your life or in the life of someone you know, not a general topic dealing with causes and effects.
Make sure you do the following:
- Write an essay of at least 900 words with a clear thesis, topic sentences, and organization.
- Include examples that are detailed and specific, making sure to add many transitional words and phrases to your paragraphs to clearly illustrate your topic sentence.
- Leave yourself time to edit for wording and grammar errors before you submit your assignment.
