An atmosphere conducive to learning is vital for any classroom. In order to do this, a teacher must
consider classroom climate, planning and instruction, as well as rules , procedures and discipline. Prior
to actually beginning to teach, you should have in mind your expectations for the environment you
want to create in the classroom. Ultimately, you – the teacher candidate – will set the tone. This
project will examine your ability to positively impact the environment of your classroom and its
management, which ultimately should impact student learning, in three different areas:
1. Classroom climate – physical classroom environment, interpersonal classroom climate
(teacher–learner; learner–learner relationships).
a. How do you as the teacher candidate use your understanding of individual differences to plan and
implement inclusive learning experiences and environments that build on learner’s strengths and
address their individual needs? CAEP 1.b
b. Consider how you – as the teacher candidate – will adapt strategies for the needs of each learner
while justifying the adaptations based on your understanding of how children grow, develop, and
learn based upon the strengths and weaknesses of the learners in your classroom.
2. Planning and Instruction – how your planning a nd instruction impacts learner
engagement/motivation/behavior
a. How do you as the teacher candidate explicitly support motivation and engagement in learning for
every learner through evidence–based practices? CAEP 3.f
b. How do you as the candidate use their understanding of how children grow, develop, and learn to
assess, plan, and implement developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences
and environments that take into account individual children’s strengths and needs? CAEP 1.a
c. Consider how you will adapt strategies for the needs of each learner
3. Rules, procedures, discipline
a. How do you as the teacher candidate manage the classroom by setting and maintaining social
norms and behavioral expectations? CAEP 3.e
NOTE: At least one strategy must be responsive to individual learner differences/needs. Identify this
strategy as such. This would mean if you are trying to address classroom climate, you may look at
using private or public praise (depending on learner’s individual differences) with learners after
learning how each impact given learners. Often, strategies that involve learner choice (if choices are
created based on your understanding of your learners) would meet this expectation.
a. How do you use your understanding of how children grow, develop and learn to implement
developmentally appropriate and challenging learning environments that take into account individual
children’s strengths and needs? CAEP 1.a
You will then reflect on the effectiveness of each s trategy. What changes did you have to make? What
worked well? What did you learn from the process? If possible, included feedback from your
cooperating teacher, learners, and parents/families.
a. How do you as the teacher candidate work collaboratively with colleagues, mentors, and other school
personnel to work toward common goals that directly influence every learner’s development and growth?

management strategies that are aligned with professional standards, research and best practices? CAEP

Please use your textbooks and course materials as resources, in addition to resources you may find in
your own research. In collaboration with your cooperating teacher and with feedback from your
instructor, develop and implement management strategies for the classroom.
Steps:*
Step 1: Write out at least one strategy per area. The strategy should consist of a plan of action (to do
something that currently is not implemented in the classroom or doing something differently –
with a reason for trying a different approach) to achieve a goal – specifically to support
learner positive behavior, engagement, and learning. Post it in the relevant discussion board
to share with your instructor and peers. The strategy should be supported with a reference to
your text(s) or another reputable source (s).
Step 2: Adjust your strategy(ies) as needed based on feedback. Step 2a: Share your strategies with
your mentor teacher. Make a note of any changes or adjustments recommended by your
mentor. Also, take into consideration feedback by your classroom management instructor.
Submit adjustments to strategies as part of your final reflection.
Step 3: Implement each strategy. I suggest you implement one (no more than 2 at a given time).
Step 3a: As you implement the strategy over at least a 2 –week period of time, keep a journal
with multiple (at least 3 –5) entries. As you journal, keep in mind positive and possible negative
impacts of the implementation of the given strategy.
Step 4: Reflect on the effectiveness of each strategy. What changes did you have to make? What
worked well? What did you learn from the process? If possible, included feedback from your
cooperating teacher, learners, and parents/families. This could include lesson closure about a
given lesson or type of instructional method used, or a survey about a given strate gy
implemented, or other feedback from your mentor, parents, etc.
*Note: If you teach multiple groups of learners, you can select one group to implement your selected
strategies with as needed.
Turn in:
• Your written strategies: Plan and write out your strategies before you implement them. This
does not have to be in paragraph for; clearly organized categories and lists may be used. (This
is done in the discussion board.)
➢ Incorporate a reflection on your collaboration with your mentor teacher, your
instructor, and peers (if applicable) in the development and implementation of your
strategies.
• Evaluation: This is basically a written reflection about the strategies. What worked? What
didn’t work? What would you do differently next time? What did you learn?
➢ Incorporate any feedback received from your mentor teacher and your reflection on this
feedback.
• Journals: Daily entries may be handwritten and will not be evaluated for grammar and
mechanics. This is a journal and will be treated as such. You will need 3–5 entries over a 2–week
period from each placement that refers to classroom management issues.
