Your final paper must be thesis-driven, it must make specific references to the film, and it must analyze how the details you reference support your interpretation of the film (which should be made clear in your thesis statement). To get more details about the final paper, please carefully read through the final paper assignment sheet (see attached file) ,
When you think about the issue, problem, or question that your argument addresses, it might help to think about one of two approaches: 1) what is this film saying about a problem that relates to real life? For example, in thinking about Boyz N the Hood, I asked a discussion question about what you think this film suggests is the way out of the hood. Taking up this question (or one like it) in the final paper would offer you a problem with clear significance. Such an approach is 2) You might consider how a film technique (or techniques if there is an overlap) work to create a certain effect in the film, which ties into a key theme. This focuses more on how the film is constructed and addresses a problem in how the film is interpreted. In other words, if someone “reads” the film one way, and you notice that if they only paid attention to the details of cinematography, then they would have a different reading. You might think about your colleagues’ posts–did other people have differing interpretations of a film than you? You might read some film reviews and see if a film reviewer had a different reading, and then you can reference the film reviewer in your introduction to help you establish the problem. (I wouldn’t single out one of your colleagues in the same way, but you could reference a difference in reading within the class in general terms, paraphrasing the opposing argument.)
The film I choose is :Moulin Rouge.
For my final paper, I want to depth analysis this film from cinematography such as types of shots, quality of lighting, camera angles, and special effects to create the language of cinema and mise-en-scene, etc. The music of this film also plays important element in this film, so related to week 6 topic, I will also analysis about the music effect in this film.
My professor’s comment:
Great film to write about, but you will want to figure out what theme you’re exploring. from there, maybe pick two elements to focus on (better to go in depth than to skim the surface), like cinematography and music.
When you go to submit your final paper, make sure your paper
- has a title
- has a clear thesis statement about the film
- makes specific references to the film, analyzing those references in order to develop your thesis statement
