In your An Introduction to Group Work Practice text, the authors present information on the interactional model of leadership. What is this model, and how does it affect the process of the group? Provide an example that demonstrates your answer.

What is the difference between case work and group work? What interventions you would use with each? How are those interventions alike, and how are they different?

Respond to DAWN “Unlike groups that focus on the leader interactional model of leadership focuses on the group and the environment in which the group functions (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). This model encourages the group members to work together for change and incorporates motivational interviewing, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic interpersonal, psychodynamic, and strengths-based methods (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). This process allows members of the group to share with each other to experience a common bond and increase motivation toward a goal. When people are surrounded by others experiencing the same problems it offers a familiarity that allows people to feel comfortable and share ideas to help each other. An example would be group sessions in a therapeutic community for addiction. The group has a qualified leader that sets the group’s tone and establishes ground rules. The group is carried by the members expressing their thoughts. The leader of this group can also assist the group by asking questions the group can answer or helping the group stay on topic if they get sidetracked.”

4. Respond to sylvia – “Case work is typically done on a one on one basis rather than a group of people. Case workers are essentially there to assist the individuals to resolve problems. “casework, which was mainly focused on problem solving and rehabilitation, group work activities were used for enjoyment as well as to solve problems”(Toseland, & Rivas, 2017). I am currently a case manager at a community mental health center and we relate our work to the bottom 2 or 3 sections of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We are there to assist the individuals to get their basic needs met, so that they can then focus on their mental health needs, rather than worrying about where their next meal is going to come from. “Differences between casework and group work can also be clearly seen in the helping relationship. Caseworkers sought out the most underprivileged victims of industrialization and diagnosed and treated worthy clients by providing them with resources and acting as examples of virtuous, hard working citizens”(Toseland, & Rivas, 2017). Group work focuses the group and the tasks that the group is intended to address. So an example of a group of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy would work with the group on cognition issues for the whole group rather than just an individual. “Shared interaction, shared power, and shared decision-making placed demands on group workers that were not experienced by caseworkers. The number of group members, the fact that they could turn to one another for help, and the democratic decision-making processes that were encouraged meant that group workers had to develop skills different from those of caseworkers”(Toseland, & Rivas, 2017). It is always important to understand how key people in a community or organization perceive a condition or problem. Explain how you would go about sensitively and thoughtfully gathering information from key community informants. According to your text, what are at least three key questions one would ask when identifying relevant incidents influencing a problem?

6. MACRO CLASS- respond to BRYAN -“This week in our readings, Netting & colleagues provided a framework for assessing community and organizational problems (Netting et al., 2016). The assessment framework is subdivided into two distinct tasks. Task one consists of gathering information from individuals within the organization or community, while task two consists of exploring the professional knowledge base on problems, conditions, or relevant factors (Netting et al., 2016). Netting & colleagues additionally provided example questiong which can be used when gathering information (Netting et al., 2016). Three questions that can be used when identifying relevant incidents influencing a problem include:
1.) Has the problem been recognized by any community or organizational members?
1a.) If so, when was this condition, problem, or opportunity first recognized in the community or organization?
2.) What are the important incidents or events that have occurred from the first recognition to the present time?
3.) What do earlier events to address this problem reveal?
The above same questions were borrowed from the assessment framework from our weekly readings (Netting et al., 2016). One way to go about thoughtfully and sensitively gathering information from key individuals would be to frame information into condition statements. Some subjects, such as domestic violence, may be difficult to address and if gone about the wrong way could be misperceived by the individual. Condition statements are precise and deliberate statements derived from fact driven research, which can eliminate or reduce a sense of bias or baseless questioning into a subject (Netting et al., 2016). In addition to qualitative date derived from interviewing key persons, the social worker may benefit from accessing quantitative data such as statistics from agency data bases to better understand the issue (Netting et al., 2016).”
