Discussion

Using the proximate determinants framework, it is argued that an individual’s external environment plays a direct role in their ability to conceive. Furthermore, the framework asserts that factors within a particular region can determine the fertility rates in the region. Latin American and African women are believed to be affected by contraceptive use as one of the factors affecting fertility. Despite the differences in socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, many Latin American countries are experiencing a rapid decline in fertility. Latin Americans generally use contraceptives because of their family values, including their view of women’s role in society and their desire to have small families. Among women in Latin America, fertility rates are declining primarily as a result of the use of contraceptives.

Contraceptives are increasingly used, which subsequently results in a significant decline in fertility. The decline in fertility was reflected in a decrease in the number of births per woman among women aged 15-49 years, from 4.2 to 2.1 per woman (Muremyi & Mutabazi, 2021). In recent decades, Africa has experienced a significant decline in its fertility rate. Contraceptives have played an important role in reducing fertility rates in the region. Contraceptives are now used by 26% of women in the region to avoid pregnancy (Yaya et al., 2019). Contraceptive use also has significant negative effects on the social and economic aspects of a community as the fertility rate continues to decline. It’s possible that the labor force will decrease as a result of the drop-in fertility rate. To meet the deficit in the labor market, policies that facilitate educational advancement are necessary for light of the decline in fertility rates.
