How does food relate to our identity?
How does food relate to our identity?
Directions: To write your essay, you will rely on your own experiences and thoughts about one important purpose of food or the relationship between food and identity. ESSAY topic is “HOW IS FOOD RELATED TO IDENTITY”.
What is one important purpose of food?
In our textbook, Holly Bauer writes: “Strictly speaking, food is defined as edible and nutritious substances that we consume in order to live and grow. But food can be much more than this. The many ways we define food – and the varied purposes it serves in our lives – say something important about our health, values, culture, identities, even our psychology. Is food a product of nature? Is it a product of science? We eat and drink many things that we probably categorize as food but are produced in labs and no longer resemble their plant and animal sources. Why do we eat them? What purposes do they serve for us – sustenance, cultural reinforcement, comfort, status? Where does our food come from? Do we know, and do we care? What makes food “real”? What makes food “good”? And are those the same things?”
If you are what you eat, who are you?
She also writes, “We eat food to stay alive, of course. Yet while food provides the calories and nutrients we need to maintain our bodies, sustenance is far from the only reason we eat. What we eat reflects aspects of who we are….
“We have all heard the aphorism ‘You are what you eat.’ But we seldom stop to think about what it really means. Is it the notion that to be healthy, we need to eat healthy, nutritious food? Or is there a deeper, more complex meaning? How does what we eat reflect and shape our identities – who we are and how we are perceived by others?
“What you eat and why you eat can vary greatly depending on your position in society, your goals and values, your culture and country of origin, and your spiritual and political beliefs. Eating with family and friends – sharing meals while sharing company and conversation – is a custom worldwide and reflects values of community and belonging (and, implicitly, privilege or exclusion). Particular foods also hold traditional places in the daily lives of those who prepare and consume them. While we eat for health, pleasure, and social purposes, we also communicate something about who we are through our food choices and preferences.”
Remember to:
- Begin by narrating the story of an experience you have had with food that draws the reader into your essay and leads to what you want to reflect upon in the essay. Be sure to include a lot of “showing” details to bring it alive for the reader. You may tell more stories in other parts of the essay as well, to illustrate different steps in your thought process.
- Write a thesis statement that answers one of the questions, what is one important purpose of food? or what is the relationship between food and identity? Your thesis should use specific language. Do not begin your essay with your thesis. Your thesis may come after you narrate the experience with food that you will begin your essay with. Or, it may come later in the essay.
- Write coherent body paragraphs containing topic sentences that support some aspect of the thesis statement.
- Fully develop each body paragraph using specific language. Each time you make a statement, be sure to give evidence or an example and explain why or how that evidence supports your point.
- Use transitions at the beginning of each body paragraph to show how that body paragraph relates to the thesis statement or to the body paragraph just before.
- Use transitions between sentences and between the different parts of sentences to show the relationships between your ideas withineach paragraph.
- Use a tone and level of diction appropriate to your audience. Work to develop your own voice. Consider your audience to be your classmates and your instructor.
- Write clearly, specially, and concisely, using as few words as necessary.
- Use specific language.
- Avoid run-ons, comma splices, fragments, inconsistent verb tenses, errors in punctuating dialog, and wordiness.
Hint:
You probably don’t want to simply state the fact that food is a nutritious substance that fuels our bodies. This is obvious and hard to write about for four pages. You want to reflect more deeply about a purpose of food or how food relates to identity, to go beyond the obvious, to explore a way to answer the question that leads you to think new, interesting thoughts. Say something that someone else might not have noticed. See the quotes from Holly Bauer above to help direct your focus.
