One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Explain why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of leading and managing groups. Provide an example.

Emotional intelligence is important in developing leadership skills, communication skills, and many other skills; it has also been linked to safer working practices (Whitney, 2018). Nursing involves a collaborative effort between other healthcare professionals, as well as other nurses, to work towards a common goal. The way someone expresses our emotions, whether it be grief or love, is specific to them and as a leader, being emotionally intelligent will help them understand that person. A lack of emotional intelligence inhibits a leader’s ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with others (HRDQ, 2021).
Behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate self-regulation. An example of self-regulation would be getting yelled at by a patient’s family for being a bad nurse. Instead of arguing back, the nurse would take a moment to calm herself down before doing anything impulsive. Other behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate would be motivation, empathy, and social skills. One example of motivation is setting a goal, like no CAUTIs for the entire month of July, and achieving it. Giving one’s full attention in any serious or nonserious conversation would be an example of empathy.

Being emotional intelligent allows one to have effective communication skills, be empathetic, be assertive and it overall leads to safer working practice. Self awareness is one of the five elements of emotional intelligence. Self awareness is defined as “understanding one’s self by recognizing strengths and weaknesses, moral values, thought processes, character, emotions, motivations, desires and goals” (Whitney, 2018). When one has self awareness they are able to master their interactions with others and have a better control of time management which is vital in effective leadership. Developing skills such as self control and empathy can’t occur until one is aware of their own feelings. A study performed at the University of Pennsylvania, comprising 43 participants from 11 countries, stated that 100 percent reported a significant improvement in workplace effectiveness when emotional self awareness was improved (Lippincott, 2020).
An example of a leader showing a high degree of self awareness is having empathy and patience with an employee who may be struggling at work due to recent troubles in their personal life. Instead of punishing the employee, an effective leader would take the time to sit with the employee and figure out what is going on. Once the leader was able to understand, they would use their empathy and thought process to come up with a solution together.
