Signature Assignment Description/Directions: Applying the principles from the “Nursing Leadership and Health Policy learning modules”, students will explore the role of the Registered Nurse Leader in policy advocacy. Exploration of the role will occur through interviewing a nurse leader. Following the interview, students will create a policy challenge presentation, integrating ideas and concepts collected during the interview.
In addition to the application of ideas and concepts collected during the interview, utilize your readings, scholarly evidence, and publicly available organizational or legislative data to build the content.
Directions:
Each presentation will need to include:
1. Brief description of the interview with the Registered Nurse Leader.
2. Brief description of the policy challenge chosen and the nursing association that was identified through the interview process. The policy challenge is an inherent problem that needs to be solved.
3. Describe the “Agenda” for the identified policy challenge. Include how the policy issue was identified, (Did the organization or individual complete a review of the literature, an environmental scan and/or a SWOT analysis?)
4. Brief description of key stakeholders (those who will be affected and those who can effect change), e.g. interest groups, opposition groups/individuals or coalitions.
5. List the different strategies that the organization plans to or has already used to inform/lobby legislators, e.g., email campaign, in-person visit, testimony, protest, etc. If this information is unavailable, use evidence from literature to establish a list of potential strategies that could be used.
6. List and describe any non-legislative strategies that were used or plan to be used to support the initiative. If this information is unavailable, use evidence from literature to establish a list of potential non-legislative strategies that could be used.
7. Based on the interview, describe where this policy challenge is in the legislative process and its implications for the future.
Expectations
Design a voice-narrated PowerPoint or Prezi to create a presentation. Based on the interview with a Registered Nurse Leader, provide an overview of a policy challenge (present or past) that the identified organization or individual supports. The policy challenge can be a local, state or federal policy issue. Create a title slide or page. Include a final slide or page with key references cited in APA 6th ed. format.
Each presentation should be between 5-10 minutes in length. Rehearse and time the presentation in advance to ensure that the 10-min. time limit is not exceeded.
