The Ethics of Style” relates to our conversations because maintaining audience awareness is also an important ethical aspect of our writing
1-We, as writers, can get to know our audience in several ways. We must have an idea of the reader’s background or knowledge of the topic we are presenting. For example, a recipient may distribute an email we send to more than just the intended recipient. As writers, we need to account for them as possible audience members. Equally as important is the reader’s interest in our topic. As the text says, readers, more often than not, skim through what is relevant to them, so we should provide just the right amount of detail for them to be satisfied. Finally, the relationship we share with our readers is crucial. In our writing, we should address higher-ups, regulars, coworkers, etc., respectively.
Understanding how we can get to know our audience helps us avoid stereotypes and assumptions. As such, we can target an audience ethically and responsibly because we know who is reading, what they know, what they need to know, and our relationship with them.
2- Getting to know our audience can be either an easy or difficult task. But what it really depends on is how you go about identifying the audience. You may either know the audience personally, see them as strangers, or see them as a part of the same social class you’re a part of as well. It is also imperative that we retain inclusivity in all of our technical writing, as no audience should be felt singled out or out of place. If I’m writing an instruction set on how to perform basic maintenance on an automobile, I would write it in a way that appeals to all readers that are inclined to learn. I could format it in a way that only automotive enthusiasts would understand, but that would be considered unfair. Unless our writing has a strong purpose for reaching a specific audience, it is more important to focus on outside audiences at all times. Our assumptions must be based on the topics we write about, accounting for the audience gender, interests, age, religious affiliations, or any other important factors. We must also account for how much are audiences are willing to read; simplifying information helps alleviate the issues that average readers suffer from. This week’s reading was an eye opener for maintaining ethical writing skills, ones that can carry over to the rest of our lives. When we enter our fields of choice, we should ensure our understandings of anybody willing to read our technical documents. That way, we can avoid any misunderstandings, disagreements, arguments, or confusion. As we now live in a more politically correct environment, it’s much easier to make simple mistakes that involve stereotyping and negative assumptions.
3-The Ethics of Style” is an interesting document focusing on how to keep our writing style according to our audience and ensuring that it does not hurt their sentiments. I like the first two quotes by Albert Einstein and William Gass, there is a lot to understand in those one-line quotes. The examples provided by the writer in this chapter are interesting, I remember reading one of the books about human behavior, this book also talks about ways of saying one thing and what way will positively affect the listener, and what may hurt the reader. The examples in this chapter are pretty much the same. I like the section in “The Ethical responsibility of writer and reader” where the writer is talking about word selection in keeping our work in a simplegeneral way. The writer makes sure to discuss reader responsibility along with the writer, this might not be useful for a large audience (assuming not all readers think the same and follow their responsibility). However, this is useful for the writer to have an idea of the reader’s perspective and what they would be expecting. I agree with the writer that the language selected (and used) saws the writer’s values. This is something that I have been hearing from my childhood from my mom, she always says that the way I speak or write saws how I am raised and what my moral values are. This chapter discusses how to stay connected with our audience. The discussion in this chapter is not limited to just writing or writing; it also talks about a speaker. It talks about how we can use some small strategy to maintain the connection with our audience which aligns with what we discussed while talking about maintaining Audience awareness in the past few discussions.
4-Our intentions as writers affect the language we choose to use in our writing, which creates an issue of ethics. For example, if we are bearing bad news on behalf of our employer/company, we may address the case so as not to implicate our employer. To write ethically, we must remember that our stylistic approach could be deceiving, like if we give too much information to overwhelm the reader or too little for them to make sense of.
One of the ways I believe the contents of this excerpt are relevant to my chosen field includes writing addressing issues. Say I’m part of a team of developers for an application. If there is an issue with the application’s security, it is our responsibility to resolve and address it. When addressing the problem, the company would not want to give a genuine apology but a statement just saying here’s what’s wrong and it is being resolved. This would also be formatted so as not to implicate the company directly. On the other hand, if I am responsible for an issue, I may use this style to address my boss or superior in an email.
I think “The Ethics of Style” relates to our conversations because maintaining audience awareness is also an important ethical aspect of our writing. Knowing our audience determines our stylistic approach, which could be used unethically, like how some companies try to deceive their customers. In contrast, we could use it ethically, so we inform our readers of precisely what they need to know.( just 50 word each one please)
