Psychological Treatment
Assignment 1 Discussion – Social Psychology Parts 1 & 2
Purpose
Explain the major social psychological concepts involved in how people think about, influence, and relate to one another and describe how these relate to the student’s life.
Directions
Note: You will not be able to see other posts until you submit your own work.
This assignment has three parts through which you will use what you have learned about social psychology to give and receive feedback from others in the class, analyze your decisions about group membership, and then describe your analysis in a short essay.
Directions – Part 1 (worth 5 points). See the Syllabus under the Course Summary section for the Initial Response due date. This gives everyone a chance to get and give feedback with plenty of time for the rest of the assignment.
Imagine that our country is under threat of imminent nuclear attack. You must make the important decision of who to let into the nearest fall-out shelter. There are 12 people vying to get in, but you can choose only five. Your choices include:
- a 40-yr-old violinist who is a suspected narcotics pusher
- a 60-yr-old architect
- a 26-yr-old lawyer who will only go in if he can bring his wife
- the lawyer’s 24-yr-old wife who has just gotten out of a mental hospital
- a 70-yr-old rabbi
- a 34-yr-old retired prostitute who was so successful that she has been living on her annuities for five years
- a 12-yr-old girl with a below-average IQ
- a male high school student who needs a wheelchair to get around
- a 20-yr-old gang member
- a 23-yr-old female Catholic graduate student who speaks publicly on the virtues of chastity
- a 28-yr-old male physicist who will only come into the shelter if he can bring his gun
- a 19-yr. old college student who has just come out of the closet
Which five do you choose? Why did you pick those five? And why didn’t you pick the others?
Directions – Part 2 (worth 5 points). See the Syllabus under the Course Summary section for the due date.
Complete the second part of the assignment by 11:59 pm on the date indicated on the Course Calendar so that students can write their essay soon after collecting feedback.
Read the choices and explanations posted by classmates. Pick one of the other student’s posts and write a response. Responses need to be more substantive than things like “I agree. Good job.” They should be 3-4 complete sentences labeling social processes and challenging assumptions made by applying one of the social psychology concepts listed below. You will need to select the concept you think is most relevant, define the concept (use your textbook!) and then be specific in how you think this concept applies to the student’s selection. Your responses should also be respectful and given in the spirit of helping everyone learn.
The following social psychology concepts can be used in your response:
- Attitudes and social influence (e.g. norms, systematic vs. heuristic persuasion)
- Attributions
- Group categorization
- Stereotypes
- Prejudice (positive and negative)
- Discrimination
- Survival: Frustration-aggression, reproductive selectivity, and/or evolution
- Correspondence bias
- Reciprocal altruism
- Cognitive dissonance
Repeat this for at least one other classmate. This means that you will respond to a total of 2 classmates. Each response is worth 2.5 points.
Responses need to be substantive by asking questions and sharing your answer to the question, giving examples or counter examples, etc. Responses that consist of only one statement of agreement or disagreement will not earn full credit. Responses that are completely off-topic will also not receive credit.
Written assignments (in any discipline) require both in-text and full reference citations. This is how you let the reader know where you obtained your information and is an important component to include in all college written work. Quoted material and paraphrased material require the use of in-text and full reference citations. For assistance with this requirement, please see the APA folder in the Assignment section.

Grading
This assignment is worth 20 points. Late work is not accepted – students who fail to submit work on any part of this assignment by the due dates will receive a 0 for those components. Failure to include proper citations will result in a 10% grade reduction (1-2 points) on each assignment.
Part 1 is graded based on identification of 5 individuals – selecting more or less than 5 will result in fewer points. Part 1 is also graded based on the depth of thought given to explain the choices. Students who provide detailed and coherent reasons for their selections will earn more points. Failure to explain each selection will result in fewer points.
Part 2 is graded based on identification and accuracy of definitions of concepts. Additionally, Part 2 is graded based on the depth of thought given to connect the concept to the response. Students who provide relevant and detailed explanations about how the concepts connect to the choices will earn more points. Failure to select a concept on the list provided, failure to accurately define the concepts, failure to explain how each concept is connected, and failure to respond to at least 2 students will result in fewer points.

Assignment 2 – Psychological Treatments
- Points 20
- Submitting a text entry box or a file upload
- File Types doc and docx
Purpose
This assignment will help you to identify the major psychotherapy and biomedical therapies used to treat psychological disorders and articulate their effectiveness.
Directions
Imagine that you are a mental health provider and are talking to someone on the phone who is wondering about your services and therapy in general. Given the variety of types of psychotherapy presented in the textbook, which would you provide? To make this decision, you will need to understand each type of therapy as well as evaluate which is most effective.
First, for each of the treatments listed in your textbook, you will need to:
1) write a 2-3 sentence summary that explains what that treatment believes to be the source of the disorder (9 points total; 1.5 points each)
2) write a 2-3 sentence explanation of one main technique used in that treatment (6 points total; 1 point each)
The treatments you need to write about are:
- Psychoanalysis
- Person-centered therapy
- Behavior therapy
- Cognitive therapy
- Group treatments
- Biological treatments
Second, select one of these treatments and find evidence that supports the effectiveness of the treatment. In other words, how do we know that this type of therapy works to help people overcome their disorder? This evidence should be from a reputable source and should be quantitative – using numbers to indicate effectiveness. You can research the evidence on your own using the internet – just be sure to verify the quality of the source! – or see pp. 506-508 in your textbook. (3 points)
In-text and full citations in APA format are required!
Format (2 pt):
- Introduction paragraph (at least 3 sentences): Includes a definition of psychotherapy, an overview of the approaches to treatment, and a statement of the treatment you believe to be most effective.
- Paragraph 1 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining psychoanalysis and explanation of one psychoanalytic technique.
- Paragraph 2 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining person-centered therapy and explanation of one PCC technique.
- Paragraph 3 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining behavioral therapy and explanation of one behavioral technique.
- Paragraph 4 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining cognitive therapy and explanation of one cognitive technique.
- Paragraph 5 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining group treatments and explanation of one group technique.
- Paragraph 6 (4-6 sentences): Summary explaining biological treatments and explanation of one biological technique.
- Paragraph 7 (at least 3 sentences): Clear statement of which type of therapy is the most effective. This statement is supported by at least reputable and quantitative evidence.
- Conclusion paragraph (at least 3 sentences): A summary of the treatment approaches, and the most effective therapy.
- Reference page listing full APA citations for all sources used (including textbook)
To submit your work: Type your essay, save it in .doc or .docx format. Select the Submit Assignment button (top right of screen) and attach your file.
Grading
This assignment is worth 20 points. Late assignments are not accepted. If the assignment is submitted after the due date it will receive a score of 0.
This essay will be graded on how accurately you explain the treatments and the specific strategies of each treatment. It is also graded on how clearly you state and support your opinion. Failure to provide evidence-based support for your opinion will result in lowered points.
To earn a high score on this assignment you must use the format outlined above as well as demonstrate clear understanding of the material. Average understanding is a 14/20 (C). Merely submitting something does not guarantee a good score – you must demonstrate to me what you’ve learned.
Additionally, assignments are always graded on the quality of writing. You are encouraged to spell check and proofread your work as poor writing will result in up to a 10% (2 pt) grade reduction.
