Leadership and nursing have important areas in common; compassion and caring (Whitney, 2018). Leaders do more than direct, organize, delegate, and have vision. They use interpersonal skills to help others achieve their highest potential. The Trait Theory of leadership suggests that certain qualities and characteristics that are inborn or natural, make someone a leader (Whitney, 2018). These qualities may be personality, intelligence, or physical factors. Trait Theory focuses exclusively on the leader and neglects the follower.
Transformational Leadership Theory is a leadership theory where a leader works with followers to identify the changes needed, create a vision through inspiration, and execute the change with a group of highly committed followers (Whitney, 2018). This type of leadership is a management style that motivates nurses to take ownership of their roles and perform beyond minimum expectations. It motivates team members by appealing to their desire to demonstrate higher moral values and integrity in practice. In this style of leadership, the leader does not hold all the power, it is equally distributed amongst all stakeholders (Whitney, 2018).
The Trait Theory has a strength that it is supported by several studies proving its’ success. It is easy to understand and is intuitive (Huston, 2017). Weaknesses of the theory is that it fails to consider situations and followers, and characteristics tend to be masculine, making it biased (Cherry, 2018). In addition, the list describing the leadership traits of successful leaders is very long, including more than a hundred different traits. Lastly, situational factors such as social and economic inequities that impact one’s ability to lead, are not considered.
The strength of Transformational Leadership is that it is attractive to people because they are social beings, and it resonates with their needs or interests (Huston, 2017). People would prefer a leader who interacts with them by giving them a chance to be better in their performance. It offers followers an opportunity to interact with their leaders professionally and form a trusting relationship. This theory combines the needs of the leaders and followers to encourage mutual participation in the development of success in a team (Cherry, 2018). There are weaknesses associated with this theory as well. Transformational leadership treats leadership as a personality trait instead of behavior that individuals can learn. It means that some people are already disqualified for not possessing the relevant personality. There also has been criticism that it is for elites and undermines democracy (Huston, 2017). There is an idea that the leader may determine the future of the organization by luring employees to behave or operate in a certain way.

Leadership styles can be very useful in nursing since they can be useful in different scenarios and create a foundation to guide problem solving. Transformational Leadership Theory was founded by James Burnes in the 1970’s. According to Whitney (2018), “Leaders know how to convey a sense of loyalty through shared goals, and this results in increased productivity, improved morale and employees job satisfaction” (p.23). This means that this type of leadership can be used to motivate staff to do more than they intend and achieve superior results promoting team and organizational interests (Specchia et al., 2021). It can be easier to implement change with this leadership style in nursing because of mutual respect. A weakness related to nursing practice is that while these types of leaders form close relationships and develop bonds with people, on the other hand, they can have a tough time reprimanding them. Servant Leadership Theory was founded by Robert Greenleaf in1970. According to Whitney (2018) “This theory calls for leaders to act in a Christ-like manner, while listening to others without judgement, thinking before reacting, using foresight and intuition, and choosing words wisely” (p.23). By having empathy towards others and listening these types of leaders can build community within their team and help them achieve their goals (Specchia et al., 2021). By sharing their power and putting other people’s needs first they can better their performance. There are many benefits within this leadership theory but when it comes to decision making it can have some weaknesses because it can be time consuming when a rapid decision must be made. Due to having to involve the whole team and be able to communicate the end goal might be difficult since not everyone might be on the same page because everyone has different leadership styles.
