Discussion Assignment 1
How to Jump Start a Poem
During this discussion you will apply a prewriting technique to jump start a poem. Use one of the suggested prompts from this week’s lecture (listed again below) as a means for developing a poem.
- Find an object in the room you’re currently in. Create a list of singular words describing it. Try to produce 20 or more. Read through that list. Start rearranging and connecting those words in ways that you feel helps to create a flow from one image to the next
- Pick an emotion. Pick an inanimate object. “Give” that emotion to that object. Explain why it feels that way
- Write a poem without adjectives
- Write a poem without verbs
- Write a poem that doesn’t describe what anything looks like, only what it sounds, feels, tastes or smells like
After you compose your poem, post it to the discussion board. In addition, discuss the prompt you used and reflect on your experience by answering the following questions.
- How successful was the prompt in helping you get the poem started?
- Would you use it again?
- Which other technique are you interested in trying?
- The initial post must be between 300-350 words

Discussion Assignment 2
What Is Poetry To You?
Post a reflection in the discussion board that examines your previous experiences with poetry. Address the following:
- Before this course, what was your perception of poetry? How did you feel about reading it? Writing it? Why do you think you felt (or continue to feel) that way?
- Which of the poetic elements discussed in this week’s course materials do you feel most comfortable analyzing and creatively employing in your own work? Why? Which element are you least comfortable analyzing and employing? Why?
- After reading/watching the lectures this week and exploring the example poems provided, how has your perception of poetry changed?
- The initial post must be between 300-350 words

Peer Review For Poems
Participate in peer review groups reviewing/offering feedback on classmates’ poetry collection. Complete your review and comments by Thursday, 11:59 PM EST so the final revisions and proofing can be implemented by the writer.
In terms of what to be looking for when reviewing, look no further than the Emily Dickinson poem that was analyzed last week. Think about “I Felt a Funeral in my Brain” and how the different Elements of Poetry were shown to be working. When looking at your peer’s poetry, ask yourself the same thing: how are they employing each of the key elements? Below is the list of different questions your feedback can address. You’re not required to answer every single bullet, but selecting a handful of the questions below to address will be helpful in making sure your feedback is as comprehensive as it should be.
- Follow the Poetry Elements Checklist to provide your peers with written feedback that will help lead them into the revision process.
- Identify specific places where the use of imagery could be improved. What images can you really see, hear, smell, taste, and/or touch? Make concrete and specific suggestions for revisions.
- What in the poem engaged you? What did you find interesting: the tone, the speaker, the setting, the meter, or the structure?
- How does the poem use figurative language, especially either metaphor or simile? If they do not, make suggestions on where they could. If they do, do those metaphors and similes work together, or do they seem isolated and random when compared to one another? Make suggestions on how the use of figurative language could be improved.
- Describe your favorite line in the poem. Why do you believe this line resonates above all the rest? What aspects stand out and how do you believe the writer could develop the other lines?
- Are there any areas where you see unnecessary words or lines? Make suggestions for improvements.
- Does the opening of the poem draw the reader in and make them want to read more? Make suggestions for improvements.
- Discuss the end of the poem. Do you believe it ends the way it should? Make suggestions for how you might end it differently.
- This is due tomorrow as well at 11:59pm so complete this after the Discussion Assignment
*(The Two peers poem drafts you have review and give feedback to is Kimberly and Juan. Their nonfiction Draft’s are attached below. The poetry Elements checklist is attached below as well)
