History or definitions so that readers will “understand what is being argued”
Write a 1000-1500 word argument essay, in which you enter the conversation about your topic, take a position, and support it with at least 4-6 reliable sources. Most sources will come from your annotated bibliography, but you may use new sources that you found as your topic and project have evolved. To do this:
Enter the research conversation by turning your research question into anarguable thesis statement. See comments on your previous work for revisionadvice and other things to consider.
- Include the following in your essay. Quotes are from the “Arguing a Position”chapter in The Norton Field Guide to Writing.
o “A clear and arguable position” (your thesis)
o “Necessary background information” which could include:
- ? Why readers should care about the topic
? History or definitions so that readers will “understand what is being - argued”
o “Good reasons” and “convincing evidence” that support your position.
Make sure that evidence is quoted, summarized, and paraphrased accurately, and cited correctly with in-text citations and a works cited page. Balance evidence with your own ideas about the topic.
o Acknowledge other perspectives or opposing positions.
