Select one U.S. president and examine how issues related to race, racism, and racial justice were addressed in their administration
Final Research Paper
The class will culminate with a final writing assignment in which students will engage with an issue related to the role of the executive branch in policymaking, focused specifically on race, racism, and the American presidency, to produce a substantive research paper. Students may select one of two options. The final paper will be accompanied by an oral presentation in which students will present their research and provide peer feedback during our in-person workshops in August.
• Option #1: Select one U.S. president and examine how issues related to race, racism, and racial justice were addressed in their administration
• Option #2: Identify and analyze a historical event or issue, specifically considering how the issue or event influenced policy agendas and assessing the overall short and long-term consequences of those policy decisions (e.g., The “War on Drugs” Under the Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama Administrations; Racial desegregation under the Johnson and Nixon Administrations)
• Option #3: Use this paper to address the Policy/Law Chapter of thesis topic as relates to the executive branch. Currently my topic is: What challenges does interoperability pose in healthcare, and how can machine learning (or AI) be used to help the industry overcome these struggles/obstacles/barriers/etc. or Alternative Question: How can machine learning (deep neural networks) in interoperability be used to address the Political Determinants of Health?
The final paper should be 15-20 pages, double-spaced, and should reflect proper spelling and grammar. The paper should be structured to include (1) an introduction section that presents the problem and succinctly states a thesis, (2) a factual background section that explains, in plain terms, the of the case study or issue, (3) a legal and policy background section that explains and critically analyzes and discuss the current state of the law or policy, or the proposed approach to the issue, and (5) a conclusion.
The paper must include a minimum of ten independent sources. Students should refer to the rubric below for this assignment for additional details and guidance.
