STUDENT-LED PRESENTATIONS
PURPOSE: The course is organized using the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework that includes core competencies for our profession. We will focus on the core competencies for health care professionals that are the basis for education and practice.
The Future of Nursing Report proposes a fundamental transformation in the nursing profession in three crucial areas—practice, education, and leadership—as well as to collect better data on the health care workforce to inform planning for the necessary changes to the nursing profession and the overall health care system. The report states that the ways in which nurses were educated and practiced during the 20th century are no longer adequate for dealing with the realities of health care in the 21st century. Outdated regulations, attitudes, policies, and habits continue to restrict the innovations the nursing profession can bring to health care at a time of tremendous complexity and change.
This assignment provides the student the opportunity to present a selected literature review on current nursing leadership issues. Students will work in groups of 3-4 persons, each leading a portion of the discussion.
HOW TO PROCEED WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT:
1. Choose a topic and group (see list below).
2. Work with assigned group.
3. Each student in the group will be responsible for doing research on the assigned topic.
4. Plan an organized, understandable presentation on the topic (assume your audience doesn’t know anything about the topic).
5. Each member of the group will have a maximum of 10 minutes to present their information
6. For the day of your presentation, assign each activity (who will do introductions, lead discussion, ask questions, summarize-see the grading criteria for presentation).
7. Designate a timekeeper and stay on time. No individual member should exceed the 10 minute limit. Example: if there are 3members in the group, the total presentation is 30 minutes.
8. The group can utilize a variety of strategies for the presentationsuch as power point, video, Q&A, and/or games. The presentation must be organized and understandable and not exceed the time limit.
9. All students in class are expected to participate in the discussion.
Key Message 4: Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure. |
