Objective: To research and practice specific clinical engagement skills from motivational interviewing related to either 1) a client of your choice from your practicum (preferred), or 2) a client case write-up provided by the instructor. To demonstrate specific M.I. practice techniques and to integrate these techniques effectively for a section of a treatment session dramatized through video. To engage in self-assessment related to your clinical intervention.
Assignment: This assignment is designed to give students practice in using specific clinical techniques and to allow students to gain knowledge and experience related to motivational interviewing. It is also hoped that students will gain confidence in client intervention, as well as the ability to critically critique their own work.
Each student is responsible for conducting a 10/15-minute individual or family session with their client in which they demonstrate knowledge of motivational interviewing through the demonstration of specific clinical techniques. The video should demonstrate at least three different discrete clinical techniques related to the overall motivational interviewing approach. In addition, the student will provide a 3-5 page write up describing their intervention and associated rationale, as well as a guided self -assessment. Video will be attached after the question has been assigned.
