We have worked on three types of formal writing: primary research/expository writing, a rhetorical analysis, and now an extended argumentative paper. For the extended research project, you should respond to a topic of interest to you—sparked because of the essay you chose from 88 Open Essays – A Reader for Students of Composition & Rhetoric. Your argument topic could expound on a related concept, social issue, scenario, theory, definition, etc. Did any of the resources from the annotated bibliography make you want to understand a topic more? This assignment is your chance to spin off on a topic that you are curious about and build an argumentative essay sustained by verifiable research. See OWL at Purdue for more information on writing an argumentative paper.
Your research paper should be between 6-8 pages. I am going to be strict about the length (from both sides—it can’t be too short or too long), because in academia, there are typically strict page length or word count requirements, and you have to learn to write for these kinds of demands. The paper should be written in APA format and utilize at least four sources from your annotated bibliography. See below for a breakdown of the assignment expectations along with the related point totals.
I will grade utilizing the following rubric:
Exceptional (10) Proficient (8) Struggling (6) Off Target (0)
Argumentative Essay Genre (10 possible points) The author writes an argumentative essay based on an issue presented from the reader. The essay investigates the issue thoughtfully and comes to conclusions that are socially relevant and impactful. The author writes an argumentative essay based on an issue presented by the reader in a thoughtful way but the analysis may lack depth or conclusions that are socially relevant. The author’s essay does not read as an argumentative essay or the issues discussed are presented in a superficial, one-sided, or socially irrelevant way.
Research (10 possible points) The content of the paper includes appropriate evidence (at least four sources) that supports their thesis and examines the issue from multiple angles. The writer utilizes and introduces quotes throughout the entire paper. The content of the paper includes appropriate evidence (at least four sources) to discuss their thesis but it may not be the most appropriate evidence or enough evidence. The writer may struggle to embed the evidence or introduce quotes. The content of the paper lacks appropriate evidence to discuss their thesis.
Writing Style (10 possible points) The writer employs an academic style that thoughtfully discusses the issue with appropriate organization, transitions, and word choices. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The writer makes a good attempt at academic style but may at some points struggle with organization, transitions, word choices, or sections of an argumentative paper. The writing is not academic and there are significant issues with organization, transitions, or word choices.
APA, Mechanics, and page length (10 possible points) The paper is mostly error free, in correct APA format, and 6-8 pages (not including cover page and reference page). The paper may have several errors, incorrect APA format, or be just short of 6 pages. The paper has significant errors in mechanics or APA format; short of page length and lacking content.
You will receive 10 points for the drafting process.
