M07 – Ethical and Legal Issues Case Study Discussion Board
3
Module 7 has focused on a rarely used and relatively poorly developed ethic in nursing: stewardship. We looked at some legal cases of fraud that likely make us all feel a little uncomfortable as professionals and how these actions of our colleagues represent us.
Instructions: You are a registered nurse or a nurse practitioner. You are assessing a patient who is currently enrolled in hospice for continued eligibility. During your assessment, you determine that the person does not meet hospice eligibility for decline. The patient has advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and relies on the hospice nurse, nursing assistant, and social worker for help in staying home and improving their quality of life. The patient is reliant on hospice-provided durable equipment like a hospital bed and supplies. You know that the support of hospice is essential for this person’s well-being and ability to stay in their home and that they have limited resources and are unable to arrange and pay for this support privately. With some minor changes to your charting, such as altering the upper arm circumference measurement and lowering their palliative performance score, you could facilitate their continued enrollment in hospice.
Please write about:

What you think the right thing is for you to do, and
