Lab 6, Intro Description:
This lab will address centripetal acceleration and its affects on moving objects. The simulation video is a single mass moving around a circle with a force scale to measure the net force created by a tension. (The toy figure is just for decoration.) Net force, mass, and centripetal acceleration are used in this lab to test how they are are all connected. The first thing you should do is find the relationship in your notes for a centripetal acceleration, and use that inside Newton’s Second Law for motion. When you gather data for your table, you will need to calculate the velocity so you can correctly have the centripetal acceleration.
Hint: What is the definition of velocity? This is defined as a changing distance/changing time. The time will be for a full loop around the circle as the wheel spins. But what about velocity? The “distance” covered by the mass will be the circumference. You should be able to calculate that!
Remember, the columns in the table can calculate things for you. Use that resource to better help with your graph when it is made. The lab asks for 6 total data points for your table. You need to do this by holding the r and m constant but changing the angular speed. The change in angular speed can be measured and will affect the force and velocity. The goal of the lab is to measure how these quantities change (do they change directly? Inversely? Linear? etc.) Use the equation from your notes to predict what will happen here!
As you finish the lab, the last question asks about what happens when the radius changes. This implies the force is a constant value. Use numbers to test your theory. It is also implied that the mass is constant. Make sure to say that the velocity would go up or down by a certain amount.
Hint: Saying “it goes up” is not enough. You need to quantify your answer. That means you need a number as well as saying up or down. Example: The velocity goes down by 3, it gets 3 times smaller.
