What does Professor Koschmann mean by the “flat earth” approach?
I’m working on a management discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

(Activity 1 Nardia) In this week’s video Professor Koschmann moves beyond conventional views of organizational communication. Reflect for a moment on the video ideas. What does Professor Koschmann mean by the “flat earth” approach? Why do you believe this approach inadequate?
The flat search approach toward communication is a perspective that seems correct to some individuals from a vantage standpoint because it works in our daily lives but ultimately it fails because it doesn’t account for the complexity of a situation when it comes to communicating effectively. In some cases, individuals are stuck in their ways and think that if they learn it that way then that’s how it’s supposed to be done and do not realize that trying new things can be beneficial to their growth. When it comes to communication a lot of elements lead to the flat earth approach such as language barriers, power, professional background, and ethnicity where some individuals believe if it’s not broken why fix it. (Koschmann, M. 2012)
I believe this approach is Inadequate because it overlooks the communicative approach which is the fundamental approach to communication. A list of complexities such as diversity, and culture would make it impossible for the flat earth approach to work when communicating because most organizations would require a better way of communication to get things done. And with technology evolving day by day, the flat search approach is not beneficial it would cause a communication struggle and information not being communicated the way it’s intended.

(Activity 2 Johnny) This questions in this activity relate to Chapter 2 in your textbook. First, develop and share your thoughts about the definition of language. What is language? What are some of the ways language can be an obstacle to communication? Select one of your obstacles and share your personal example/experience. What emphasis strategies could have been employed to address any of the obstacles you identified? Be sure to develop your ideas fully and then respond to at least 2 your colleagues.
According to Communication. (n.d.) We often call this code “language”: a system of symbols, words, and/or gestures used to communicate meaning. To me this is the universal way of how we communicate with each other and describe what exactly we are discussing. Language can be an obstacle when you do not understand what another person is trying to describe to you. Slang is an obstacle in language that I am familiar with. I’ve actually used slang in a work-related discussion which led to confusion from the person I was talking to and ultimately we wasted time from me having to explain myself.

(Activity 3 Lakesha) Thoroughly describe the experience using the Components of Communication found on pages 10 and 11 of your text. What meaning was negotiated during your interaction?
In the most recent conversation experience using the Components of Communication, I would choose a channel, source, environment, and interference.
Most of my day consists of telephone conversations, email correspondence, and often face-to-face interactions. Therefore, I think about the tone, ensure I speak to the person and not at them, and how it will come across in delivery. Over email and the phone, we tend to have a more relaxed tone. On the other hand, I double-check my posture when a customer is present to ensure they have my undivided attention. However, after a great lunch and toward the end of the day, communication is occasionally lost in translation. This is when it is equally important to ensure you understand the receiver’s messages and vice versa. The assumption of communication is to understand the meaning (Communication, n.d.) of what we say and how we say it.
