  • To identify and articulate a problem, you will also need to consider the potential negative consequences to the field or stakeholders if the proposed research is not conducted. This contributes to the potential significance of the study.
  • For this slide, state clearly and concisely who will be negatively impacted if the problem is not addressed/ In your speaker notes, you can expand on this.

Problem Statement Outline

When defining the problem, a clear distinction must be drawn between what exists currently and what would be considered ideal. A practice-based problem does not necessarily require generalizable results beyond the research setting; however, it must address a practice-based problem relevant and substantiated within the literature.

It is important to note a lack of research alone is not a compelling problem because many phenomena are not studied but do not necessarily warrant research.

The process of developing a researchable topic is a process of moving from a general interest toward a more clearly refined idea around a researchable problem (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019). It is important that the problem becomes specific and narrow enough to let you master a reasonable amount of information. As pointed out by Bloomberg and Volpe (2019), while a problem is the focus of the dissertation-in-practice, it is important that a researcher does not already know the outcome of the study. In fact, a dissertation-in-practice is a process of discovery for a researcher and the academic community. Scholarly academic peer-reviewed research is employed to support the identification of the presented problem, the importance of the crisis/issue, and the need to research the problem.

Refining the problem to be addressed calls for reflecting on whether that problem can and should be researched in the first place. First, whether the problem can or cannot be researched involves giving some thought to the practical feasibility or do-ability involved (Marshall & Rossman, 2016). Important judgments will have to be made regarding the possibility of access to potential sites and potential research populations, availability of sources of information, the researcher’s knowledge and skills, and the availability of time and resources available to collect and analyze data over a sustained period. Second is the question of should. This question is complex and brings various factors into play including potential audience, intellectual value and worth of the study, personal and professional goals, and ethical considerations.

In setting up a research study, you will develop a statement of the problem connected to an educationally related topic of interest. The problem statement is one of the most important foundational elements of a dissertation; so, in developing your problem statement, be sure that it refers to an important, authentic, genuine problem that is significant and, therefore, worthy of investigation.

Note that in accordance with the SoE’s Applied Doctoral Proposal and Manuscript Template, the section addressing the research problem should not exceed 300 words. As such, all assignments that call for including a research problem should correspond to the template.
