Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.

Both leadership and management in nursing are essential for an organization’s success. There are many similarities between leadership and management but there are also significant differences between both roles. Every nurse is a leader in one way or another and leadership doesn’t have anything to do with a position or title in an organization (Duggal, 2022). A leader is someone can take initiative to lead change and invests to accomplish a vision while inspiring others to do the same (Duggal, 2022). A management role is more about performing pre-planned day to day tasks and has more defined authority by the organization. A manager is responsible for four important functions in management which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. “Managerial role entails making assignments and coordinating tasks to be completed, developing and motivating staff as needed by encouraging professional development, defining goals, evaluating outcomes, and offering feedback to staff” (Whitney, 2018, p. 22). Managers can become effective leaders if they adequately carry out responsibilities like communicating good and bad, providing inspiration and guidance, and encouraging employees to a higher level of productivity (Duggal, 2022).
Management and leadership have many common objectives in order to achieve goals. According to Whitney, (2018), a leader-manager role combined includes thinking long term, being visionary, influence others, and are change agents. Goals of management and leadership overlap when influencing and motivating staff to develop competencies to achieve an objective. For example, bringing in new and better strategies of care or implementing new technology to care based on evidence-based practice. The nurse leader-manager role would be in charge of convincing why new practices are implemented.
As a nurse leader taking advantage this overlap, I can facilitate change by influencing others when leading change in my organization. Managing to find solutions to problems and motivating staff keeps morale high and contributes to job satisfaction (Nightingale College, 2021). Having good communication skills can help communicate policies and procedures effectively.

Although leadership and management go hand in hand, and work together to get the job done, there are many differences between the two roles. Nurse leaders most typically supervise nursing teams and ensure overall success of the hospital as a whole or the specific unit they are assigned too (Whitney, 2018). Most nursing leadership roles include making sure patients receive quality care and best possible outcomes (Post University, 2021). A nurse manager is going to be responsible for the managing the day-to-day operations in their specific nursing department and supervising that departments staff. A nursing manager is not involved with direct patient care, but instead oversee the staff that is dealing with direct patient care (Post University, 2021). Leadership is used in management and truthfully all nurses are leaders in health care (Whitney, 2018).
Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example.
As stated above these two roles work together to make a hospital run. They often have overlapping roles in organizing, implementing change, and also bringing innovations. In either position you work in you will need to show good leadership and management skills, in both (Post University, 2021). Having good communication skills is a huge part in both of these specialties. Bringing in new things to a hospital is where both of these jobs would overlap.
As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.
As a nurse leader, I could perhaps show and explain to my peers how to properly follow procedures and policies, thus leading to improved patient care. As a nurse manager I would see the reaction of the policy/procedures and see how the unit reacted. By this overlap it would improve the workspace while explaining and understanding why we are doing something.
