Exercise 1: Communication Climate

Step 1: Listen to the Gibb’s Climate Research Lecture and read the section in Chapter 11 related to this topic (p. 356-361)
Step 2: Analyze the communication climate you currently experience in one relationship (be sure it is just one person) by applying at least 4 categories of Gibb’s climate research (i.e. control versus problem orientation equals one category and certainty versus provisionalism equals a second category). Provide specific examples of your language and nonverbal communication to demonstrate your understanding of the four components.
Step 3: Finally, even if you have a very supportive relationship climate, explain how you could improve this relationship by identifying which components of Gibb’s climate research that you could demonstrate more. Do not focus solely on how the other party in the relationship needs to change his/her behavior. How could you change your behavior?
Exercise 2 Conflict Management:

Step 1: Listen to the lectures on Guidelines for Giving Constructive Criticism and Getting to Yes (found in Learning Module 6) and complete the Getting to Yes reading on that lecture page. In addition, read the section in Chapter 11 on Responding Non-defensively to Criticism (p. 367-372) and culture’s influence on conflict (p. 399-400). You may also wish to review the Introduction to Culture Lecture (15 min)

How can Brendan and Claire demonstrate the Getting to Yes concept of “separate people from the problem” in this conflict?
What are the “interests” (according to the Getting to Yes material) behind Brendan’s and Claire’s positions?
What “options” could they generate for addressing this conflict?
What “objective criteria” (According to Getting to Yes) could they use to help them choose from these options?
How are Brendan and Claire’s differing cultural orientations (see Intro to Culture Lecture) possibly influencing this conflict?
