*Students are expected to achieve competency with the clinical skills list
**Procedures are skills that may be available for students but are not required.
Summary of strengths:
Based on this clinical skills assessment, my strengths manifest in three domains in clinical practice. These are: a. Proficiency in conducting physical exams: given the spectrum of patients under my care, I am confident in my skills in conducting wide-ranging physical exams on male and female adult patients. b. Treating and dressing wounds: My skills in wound dressing are sufficient to enable me to care for these patients. Burn wounds are particularly delicate when it comes to dressing since they are prone to infections that can lead to sepsis (Ladhani et al., 2021). I am proud that I can confidently apply my skills to assist burn victims. c. Excellent bedside manners: I inspire feelings of trust in my patients by treating them with respect. My demeanor is friendly when I interact with patients in the clinical setting, enabling me to reciprocally inspire respect even though I introduce myself as a student. I can get most of my patients to give consent which facilitates other facets of nursing care, such as physical assessment. |
Opportunities for growth:
Despite some of my strengths in certain areas of clinical practice, I still have a few shortcomings that accord me with the opportunity to improve myself as an FNP student. These include: a. Increase my knowledge of some basics of laboratory testing and examination. Particular areas of interest include revisiting basic microscopy techniques and staining methods. b. Improve my knowledge of radiology and anatomy to better interpret commonly used diagnostic tests such as chest x-rays. c. Acquire basic surgical skills. This will necessitate me taking a short course on basic surgical skills to improve my suturing skills (McAnena et al., 2018). |
Now, write 3–4 possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. Improve in applying professional knowledge based on current practice guided by evidence-based nursing before the end of this practicum. 2. Develop strong leadership skills to foster an environment that encourages open communication and teamwork among my colleagues before the end of this practicum. Effective communication among the nursing team is responsible for coordinated patient care (Warmling and de Souza, 2018). 3. Ensuring more patient-centered care in my approach to nursing care before completing this practicum. |
Conclusion
Based on this self-assessment exercise, I have discovered that I am proficient in specific clinical skills as an FNP student. What remains now is to have greater confidence in my practical skills and knowledge. Initially, I used to be timid to avoid antagonizing my seniors in the nursing profession. This inadvertently got in the way of me asking questions or volunteering to perform certain procedures. However, I am now confident in my skills in most areas and will work on my shortcomings to ensure excellence in my practice. I am learning the importance of not selling myself short. Greater confidence in my skills will have a carry-over effect in my practice. It will go a long way in opening up more learning opportunities in my career as a family nurse practitioner.
