Community Engagement Project
Based on your self-reflection from class discussions and sociocultural identity paper throughout the semester, describe an area of growth and complete a multicultural project to help your development in this area. See options below. All projects must use APA style and cite course readings and other material. Multimedia can be used as an alternative to a written paper (e.g., record a podcast, produce art representing your experience, perform spoken-word poetry or dance, recite a song, present to the class, etc.) but you need to include a reference page for sources; see professor for approval.
Option 1: Psycho-Educational Response to Social Justice Issue
In the spirit of advocacy, develop a mental health resource (e.g., support group, information sheet to congressional representative, self-help infographic, social media posts; YouTube video) that targets a social justice issue we’ve covered in the course as a way to give psychology away. This can be in reference to the election results and/or voter engagement materials, racial uprisings, or marginalized population(s) facing greater disparities with COVID 19. Integrate material from the course and identify additional resources in the creation of this resource.
Option 2: Cultural Immersion.
Attend an event, spend time in a neighborhood, or local business in which you immerse yourself in a sociocultural group different from yourself from the dominant group (e.g., night club, community meeting, neighborhood event, shopping area, restaurant, etc.). You should attend the event alone and for at least 2 hours. The idea is for you to experience what it might feel like to experience being in the minority, even though temporarily. Reflect on 1) why you each chose this experience and social identity group; 2) your prior experiences, assumptions and biases toward this group, 3) the experience itself including how it felt for you to be there and how your presence may have impacted the group, 4) contextualize your experience with literature from the course, and 5) reflect on implications for your role as a counselor.
Option 3: Cultural Interviews. Individually, Conduct one-on-one interviews with someone from a different race, sexual orientation, gender identity, social class, nationality, or religion than you. You should select someone who’s social identity you aren’t familiar with or already immersed in. This interview should explore what their specific social identity means to them, the related experiences they have encountered, and other questions that help you understand what it is like for them as that particular social identity. Analyze your findings in context of the theories and research covered in the course.
Option 4: Racial Analysis Book Review. Read one of the autobiographies below and provide a racial/ethnic analysis and book review. In it, 1) summarize the main points of the text, 2) reflect on your emotional and intellectual reactions, 3) connect to theories and research from the course, and 4) discuss specific implications for multicultural counseling (e.g., what would it be like to counsel one of the people in the books, how might this book inform your therapeutic practice, etc.).

With this project, you'll integrate course readings, lectures, discussions, and videos throughout the semester to identify and analyze your project.

2. Complex Thinking: Integrates personal development with course theories and research. Considers intersecting identities and multilevel experiences (e.g., individual, interpersonal, institutional, ideological). Articulates an awareness of power, privilege, and oppression.
3. Application to Counseling: Integrated material from the course; applied experience to mental health and your role as a counselor in training
4. Communication:
· If written: Writing is organized, uses topic sentences, introduction and conclusion, and APA 7th edition. Papers should be approximately 5-7 pages.
· If video recorded: answering all the questions and linking to course. Recordings should be approximately 25-30 minutes.
