ORIGINAL THESIS
As a single Father of a 5 year old, I have often had the problem of finding childcare on Military Installation's. I am not the only one who has came across this issue. In a survey taken in October 2020, there were about 800,000 children under the age of 5 who needed childcare on a military installation. The CDC's only serve 25%, or 200,000, of these children. The families of the remaining 600,000 children are either forced to use civilian off post establishment's, near by family member's or even opt out of their contract and be chaptered out of the Military.
It is obvious that the Military can not stop families from having children. Childcare is an essential resource to these families for the Service Member to maintain their "readiness". If this option is unavailable to Service Members, then what choice does that leave so many families? From my experience, this has caused so much stress on myself. As a Drill Sergeant, I work very, very early mornings and late nights, so when this childcare is unavailable to myself and so many other's it creates more stress on us than we already have.
I think what my solution would be to certify spouses to become in home child care takers as the Service Member in processes their new installation. Military Spouses have a tough enough time to find employment once they move, so this will fix two issues at once. It could create job opportunities for those Spouses seeking employment, as well as providing more in home care for Service Member's who have had an issue with finding room in the CDC's.
REVISED THESIS
My revised statement is that the Military Community should provide an in home child care certification process for Spouses in order to create employment opportunities and more resources for available for the childcare shortage. I think this is both a win-win for those Spouses who have trouble finding work when moving with their spouse every two to three years. This certification would carry over to any base that they were to move to. Of course there would have to be prerequisites, background checks and also strict CDC guidelines to run an in home childcare to be certified. I also spoke on the shortage of availability in actual CDC's. I think it would be easy to persuade the stakeholder's just due to the fact that we would create jobs as well as lower stress levels of Military Families.
RIVAL HYPOTHEIS
A rival hypothesis I seem to face for my topic is that with the lack of resources to childcare on Military bases, the Military readiness and retention is being affected.
"The DoD recognizes that high-quality child care is both a readiness and a retention issue. If parents are forced to make do with inadequate child-care arrangements or cannot find child care, they may be distracted from duty or in some instances may even fail to report for duty in order to care for their children. Inadequate child care may also affect a family's decision to remain in the military."
Due to the lack of childcare slots available, this is affecting the readiness and retention of Military families. This article was really getting at the stress that this problem could cause on one's mental health.
MAIN POINTS I’M TRYING TO GET ACROSS
Main Point #1 – The lack of resources available for childcare in the Military Community is detrimental to the Readiness of Service Members.
Main Point #2 – Due to unavailable spaces in the CDC's, Service Member's are sometimes left with no other choice than to be discharged from the Military due to not having a valid Family Care Plan.
Main Point #3 – Military Spouses are unable to seek employment due to the lack of childcare; making them stay at home husband or wives.
Main Point #4 – Lastly, planning for and arranging some sort of childcare can be extremely stressful. Service Members are put in stressful situations every single day, whether it be in the Garrison setting or a combat environment. To have that added stress on us is almost a burden that none of us should have to deal with when sacrificing so much already.
