According to the CDC, in 2019 the third leading cause of death was due to accidents or unintentional injuries (Jiaquan Xu et al, 2021). Age is a very important factor in relation to this cause of death. In 2006 through 2016 unintentional injuries were the leading cause of death for individuals in the three age groups of, 1-14 years, 15-24 years, and 25-44 years of age. Whereas the leading cause of death among individuals aged 45-64 years old, during this time period, was chronic disease (Friis & Sellers, 2021). Age seems to show the most significant data when referring to the 'person' characteristic. Regarding the 'place' characteristic in unintentional injury/accident deaths, I did not find any significant data showing that there were more accidents or unintentional injuries, generally speaking, in one state than another, when taking into account population size. However, when looking at unintentional motor vehicle accidents, there are obvious places within cities where more accidents tend to occur. I'm sure every person reading this can think of a busy intersection or cross road in the city that they live in that they have witnessed more accidents due to the high volume of traffic and/or time of day. A characteristic of time that can be of note is the time of year in certain states that get bad winter weather, which causes an increase in car accidents that can be fatal. According to a law firm in the state of Michigan, "About 70% of accidental deaths that occur during the winter happen in cars" (The Sam Bernstein). Lastly, is the characteristic of 'time' in regard to unintentional injuries. Specifically, related to motor vehicle accidents, I can think of three times of the day that I have witnessed most motor vehicle accidents; those being the morning commute, lunch hour, and rush hour after work. During these times most people are in a hurry, running late, and are not paying the best attention to how they are driving, resulting in accidental deaths.

Jacqueline Discussion:
Descriptive epidemiology uses three characteristics of person, place and time. Of the top ten leading causes of death in the year 2019 for the United states pneumonia and influenza are listed 9th 2019 (CDC, Jan 2022). However, in the last year covid 19 pneumonia was listed as its own category. The flu and pneumonia are more likely to affect adults 65 years and older as well as children under two years. People with comorbidities are also more likely to have complications, increased morbidity and mortality from influenza and pneumonia. Non-Hispanic African Americans Hispanic American Indian or Alaskan are more likely to be hospitalized for the flu. Historically pneumonia was the leading cause of death for children under five in 1900. However, as of 2018, it is no longer listed as a leading cause of death for this age group (Cunningham, 2018).
Seasonal flu travels globally and is more likely to affect people in the United States from early fall October through early spring in April (CDC, Feb. 2022). However the difference of seasons throughout the united states differ slightly. For the characteristic of place, travelers and those in close proximity to others are more likely to develop flu and pneumonia. The elderly in care facilities are more likely to die from complications of flu and pneumonia (CDC, 2022).
