Thomas Torrance spoke of the Trinity using an analogy you may be less familiar with. He spoke about the molecule serving as a good analogy for various reasons; one molecule will contain a proton, a neutron, and an electron. But the more insightful part of this analogy is that it takes into consideration the fact that we cannot really consider protons or neutrons or electrons in isolation, but only insofar as they relate to one another.
By contrast, though, we sometimes consider Christ and the Holy Spirit independently, as if it is possible to do so without considering each divine Person in the Trinity apart from the relationship that each one has with the other members of the Trinity.
At Jesus’ baptism, we see the three members of the Trinity relating to one another in this unique and intimate way: “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased’” (Matt 3:16-17). One God, three divine Persons. May we marvel together at the majesty of our God.
