Order Instructions
Part 1: Mentor and School Leader Interviews
Interview your mentor about events the school has conducted to integrate ELL students and families into the school and the larger community. Discuss the following:
How have you been involved in school events that engage ELL students and families?
What linguistic and cultural considerations were made to support the ELL students and families?
What types of activities or events do your ELL students and families express a need for and see as priorities?
How do you demonstrate empathy for the ELL students and families in your classroom and school?
Collaborate with your mentor to interview a school leader. In addition to the questions listed below, prepare a minimum of two additional questions that will help you in completing Parts 2-3 of this field experience.
How is a welcoming and inclusive school environment created for ELL families?
How do you determine which schoolwide events are needed and beneficial for all families?
What barriers or challenges have you encountered in planning and implementing school events?
How do you gauge or assess if a school event was successful or not?
Be sure to take notes during both interviews as you will provide them when submitting this assignment.
Part 2: School Event Design
Collaborate with your mentor to design a school event with the primary goal of integrating ELL students and families into the school and the larger community. Decide on the specific purpose or type of event (e.g., literacy or math night).
Include the following in the design:
The agenda or activities during the event
Specific ways to include and leverage ELL students and families in all parts of the event (planning, preparation, and participation)
Linguistic and cultural considerations based on the ELL population of the school
At least three family service agencies from your state or local community that will be present at the event to provide information that supports ELL families
Use any remaining field experience hours to provide support or assistance to the class as directed by your mentor.
Part 3: School Event Digital Flyer
Using a digital resource of your choice, create a flyer to present the details of the school event that was planned with your mentor. If time permits, share your completed digital flyer with your mentor to obtain feedback.
Include the following:
General information (event title, date, time, location)
Activities that will occur during the event and that demonstrate linguistic and cultural considerations for ELL students and families
At least three family service agencies attending and a brief description of each
How ELL students and families can be part of the planning and preparation of future events
The digital flyer should include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.
Ensure that others can access and view the link to your digital flyer prior to submission.
Submit your interview notes and a link to your digital flyer in one document.
