When assessing the productivity of a project and its impact on healthcare settings, selecting a benchmark is among the most important tools in project management (Akinshin, 2019). It is important to select a benchmark as it will provide a way in which one can analyze the performance levels of an EBP project which can lead to consistency regarding the delivery of quality care (Spencer et al., 2019). It can also help in the identification of poor outcomes using other fall prevention strategies that have led to more falls or are very costly to the facility. Selecting a benchmark is also important as it can be helpful in the identification of the root cause of productivity problems (Akinshin, 2019). This means that identifying and correcting the issue will also lead to reducing patient falls in the assisted living facility.
Appropriate internal and external benchmarks
The right internal benchmarks should be those that help in analyzing the key work functions in the same organization and ensure that their comparison is made accordingly (Spencer et al., 2019). During the process, it is crucial that one can identify best practices within the facility and ensure that they are compared to others within the facility, which helps improve existing practices over time. At some point, though, it will be necessary to see how the assisted living facility (ALF) staff will be performing compared to other ALFs that make the facility competitor (Spencer et al., 2019). External benchmarking is helpful in comparing the healthcare industry; in this way, managers can judge the performance of their organization on the basis of other organizations’ achievements. The organization is also able to access the types of improvement that were found to be successful and impactful elsewhere or be in a position to harness them from within the same facility.
One could employ several different benchmarking tools, such as the Morse fall scale, and STEADI toolkit as EBP fall prevention screening tools which are specific to adults aged 65 years and older. Which report specific strengths and weaknesses of each screening tool in the specific age group. Conversations or written material with staff members using different fall screening tools and their results could be used to construct the analysis.
Patient satisfaction can be effectively measured through the use of surveys, which are also valuable methods for evaluating the effectiveness of a fall prevention tool. Consider using benchmarking as a methodical strategy to obtain the highest possible standards and quality of care, both of which are essential to the process of developing the best possible patient experience (Akinshin, 2019). If there are deficiencies, the answers that you find through benchmarking will instruct you on how to maximize productivity and boost the efficiency of the employees that you already have (Akinshin, 2019).
In conclusion, choosing a benchmark provides a lot of advantages in the evaluation and presentation of the project students will be able to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for them to improve. It will also help in the identification of existing gaps on which the project will be focused on solving.
